Meet Tatou Dede

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tatou Dede. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tatou below.

Hi Tatou, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
That is a good question. By doing. And what I mean by that is, I was constantly doing shows, exploring ideas, trying new things, putting myself in the process and gradually, all that, were narrowed down to one thing; directing. After my first direction, I knew that I found my place, because of all that I had acquired through my “doing”. All was coming together under this new identity.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a multidisciplinary artist. I was born in Athens, Greece, but grew up in Kranidi, a lovely small town in Peloponnese. I started studying  piano when I was 6 years old and after graduating from high school, I moved to Thessaloniki, where I got my BA from the Department of Music, Science and Art at the University of Macedonia. In 2008, I returned to Athens and continued my studies in dance, earning a professional diploma from the Rallou Manou Professional Dance School. During my exploration of movement, I had my first experience with theater, and I knew I was home. After four years of studies in drama school, I graduated with a degree in acting. I began my career as a performer, but when I directed my first show, “SEVEN7”, I realized that this is what i want to do with my life.

As a multidisciplinary artist and director, my goal is to combine the arts I have studied and experienced, creating an innovative patchwork of theater, dance and music. To add to that mix, I am currently working on incorporating interactive technology and video art into my work. I deeply believe that creating a work is like a puzzle; one that needs each piece placed in exactly the right spot.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most important qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are my studies, my mentors/teachers, and my perseverance. The advice I would give is: – Keep studying, exploring, and learning new things. Embrace knowledge from wherever it comes.
– Study with, work with, and meet people who inspire you and who have knowledge and experience to share with you. Listen to them, and then try to figure out your own path.
– Trust your insist. Follow your inner voice, your instinct and keep going. Let your ideas guide you and share them with close friends and collaborators, so they can become bigger and eventually start to flourish.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! I am in a stage in my career where I am looking for professionals in the performing arts and producing to collaborate and exchange ideas. I love people that are passionate about their work, are committed and love to bring projects to life. Currently, I am putting together a new show and I would love to meet aspiring producers who want to get involved in the performing arts, and are open to explore a more experimental scene and are looking to build strong and permanent work partnerships.
