Meet Tavion Dixon

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tavion Dixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Tavion, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
One of the most important ways and habits of how I keep my creativity alive is first, making sure that everything that I’m currently working on that involves being creative is always fun to do instead of feeling like it’s a job. If I’m enjoying the process and it resonates with my energy, then I feel like my flow-state will be continuous and the inspiration will keep the creative juices flowing. I never want to force my creativity and inspiration so if I’m not feeling whatever I’m creating, I take a break from it and come back to it when the moment is present. Living and experiencing life is another way I keep my creativity alive because it allows me to draw inspiration for when I’m away from being creative and get a different perspective for when I come back to it. It also allows me to continue to be present in the moment and take everything in, helping me balance taking breaks with art sometimes. Meditation helped me realize this a couple years ago and I learned that when it comes to being creative, it should always be free-flowing and never forced so when that feeling of being stuck appears, it is always good to come back to it later when the inspiration is there.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Tavion. I’m 24 years old, I’m from North Carolina, currently living in Brooklyn. I’m a creative that makes music under the name Supa Dupa. I produce, DJ, mix, master and engineer my own music but also love to work with other like-minded creatives and i’m open for collaboration as well. Im finding my own way in New York, looking for opportunities, gigs and ways to currently spread my music and gain a reputation. I’ve been making music since I was the age of 8 and i’ve been building my craft ever since then. With the sound of my music, I like to blend different elements of genre to create a whole new sound that blurs the lines of style and genre, in which I call my “Supa” sound. As I was growing up, music was constantly being play everywhere I was and my family loves music so eventually, I would seek my love for music and start to make my own sounds. The main thing that I want people to know about me is that I want them to chase their own dreams and never settle for less (as long as their dream isn’t harming anyone else). Nothing’s impossible and it can be achieved through passion, dedication and hard work. Never settle for less and put your 200% into what you love. I’m currently playing shows and working on projects daily with big plans of dropping more music and dj sets that you should look-out for this year.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I feel like the most important qualities or skills that were most impactful on my journey currently are my “sponge brain” with my ability to learn about the things I’m interested in, my work ethic, and my infinite love for music. I feel like having the perspective of being the student of life, opens up plenty of possibilities and doors for you to open because you have a greater appreciation for learning knowledge and taking everything in but also retaining information as well. If you have a good work ethic, then I feel like nothing can get in the way of your workflow and stop you from your hustle. You also become dependable to people and become a better self-starter in what you love to do. The last thing about having a big love for music is that you are always on the hunt for new sounds and you can appreciate more sounds of music but importantly, you remember the reason for why you choose music when you immerse yourself in the scene.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
There is one challenge that I’m currently facing in this chapter of my life and that is trying to find my way in this new city and break out of my comfort zone to evolve into a newer and higher version of myself. With recently moving to New York, I’ve found myself in a new environment with new faces around me in a place that I’ve never explored. This was my first big move from home leaving my hometown and family to find bigger and better opportunities. Before, I worked for two years in my hometown after I graduated college and found a job as a central service technician working on the graveyard shift, which was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. That chapter of my life taught me about consistency, self-care, and being dedicated to setting goals, trying to make my dreams happen, and opening doors. Working there was one of the worst jobs I’ve ever had with bad management, people who made other people’s jobs harder than they should have been, and a terrible schedule but the payment was enough for me to get to where I’m at now. Currently, it feels like I’m starting over again by trying to find new income, the right people to hang around, and immersing myself into the city and music scene when I don’t know anything about this new spot that I’ve made my way into. This challenge that I am facing now is reminding me to forever stay on my hustle and embrace the uncertainty and the unknown. If I feel scared or anxious about doing something that is new grounds for me, then I should jump into it with all my might and heart and 100% go for it because it might lead me to another door.
