Meet Tay No Tee

We were lucky to catch up with Tay No Tee recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tay No Tee, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

At the end of the day you just have to be yourself and know who you are and what you stand for. You have to limit the comparisons because all that will do is low ball your worth. No matter what room you walk in, despite whose in there, you show up as YOU and you can’t loose. Cause can’t no one be you better than you can be you!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a hip-hop artist born and raised in Austin, Texas. I started rapping in high school around 2014. It started as a way to speak my mind in a way folks would listen, then it grew into an avenue of releasing my emotions and “letting it out.” Now I do it for those things still, but more so for the love of the art.

I am a part of Duece Tray Entertainment, a brand that stands firm on leading with love, and support but also calling a spade a spade. Real talk with real experiences coming from the soul. All in a way to connect with the listener on a deeper level.

I go by the name of Tay No Tee! I had to go through a rebranding because it was hard for fan to find my music on platforms. I went from Tay to Tay No Tee because it was something that was me already without it being a gimmick. I was always known as the kid who wore a jacket with no t-shirt in school due to weather in Texas being unpredictable, so it just stuck. Nowadays, I do it to also promote body positivity, and encourage my listeners to be themselves, and learn to be comfortable in their own skin.

I believe in showing love and getting love (#SLGL). I created a community called F3 which stands for Family, Fans, and Friends. The idea is to embody SLGL, and build a community who supports each other to grow in connection and get/receive love. My mission now is to find more ways to do that, and connect with the city better. Whether that be shooting content with other brands, making songs to help promote them, or even mentioning them in my own, serving the city is my current focus.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

For me the top 3 key factors that made an impact on me would be gratitude, self confidence, and keeping god first. These things not only made a difference as an artist, it really shaped me as a person.

I learned to make sure my self confidence was deep rooted in love. Over time I realized it’s probably the biggest factor in the outcome of you becoming the best version of yourself. If you don’t have confidence in yourself, you can’t expect anyone else to. I struggled with that growing up cause I was told things about myself that I subconsciously believed. I had to work overtime to overcome that which I told myself.

Through it all I made sure I maintained a posture of gratitude. Through the ups and downs of life, it’s imperative. I leaned on the thought that no matter what I go through in life, theirs always someone going through worst. Inversely, despite whatever hardships or struggles I endure, theirs always an overflow of blessings I’ve have that gets over looked, you just have to take the time and find it, most times it’s in your face. It’s all about being humble and shifting your perspective.

Lastly, but also the most important which is keeping God first. Without placing the most high as your number one, it’s difficult to navigate life with certainty. The enemy will come at you in so many ways, we need to trust in him and believe in his promises knowing that his way is THE way. Make him your solid foundation and you can’t go wrong.

My advice to any new upcoming artist is to embody these things and go for it! No excuses, no stutter stepping, go all in and all out for what you want. You will fall, you will fail but it will all be learning lessons that you need. Dont be afraid to fail, and don’t quit. REMEMBER, the only difference from you and the people who made it is, they didn’t quit.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

This year I’d say my biggest area of growth would be my mental state. I’ve set myself back some years solely due to the way I thought. That affected a lot of things in my life from the way I carried myself to the decisions I make.

Knowing that, I’ve been trying to focus on getting rid of all the things reaffirming the negative mindset and replacing them with positive ones. One specific way of doing that is focusing on consistency because that is what will lock in any of these habits and allow me to build upon them. So I’ve been strengthening areas that I am weak at as well as facing my fears. A few things being cooking, running, and researching/reading – all things I can’t stand doing. But they will build a habit of consistency as well as working the muscles of doing that in which I may not have the urge to do, but doing it anyway.
