Meet Tay Robinson

We recently connected with Tay Robinson and have shared our conversation below.

Tay, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my passive at the age of 5. I used to play in my family member’s hair and one day my aunty told me that I can style hair for a living. I remember being so surprised and happy to find out that being a hairstylist was a real career that I can make money doing. From there I knew what I was going to do in life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Being a hairstylist brings me joy in many ways. One of the best things about being a hairstylist is that I meet so many different people and touch so many lives through my services. I understand face shape and hair types to create looks that complement my clients’ natural features. I’m also honest about what looks good and offer recommendations to create a style that matches each person’s unique fashion sense in a way that still looks good. It’s one thing for my clients to be happy with their new look when they’re walking out the door or down the wedding aisle, but it’s better to make sure they’re just as happy until their next appointment or memories to come.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My three qualities are my creativity, my business mind, and my ability to style all hair type. My advice would be to not let other people set limitation on you. I knew my passive and destiny. I had so many people trying to live through me and direct me where they wanted me to go to for their own benefit. But I stood my grounds, and I don’t regret it. I also had jealous co-workers and family members tell me that I would never reach my goals, but I never let that stop me. Don’t let it stop you either. Those same people today tell me they are proud of me. Also, learn different areas of your craft. Hair extensions, different hair type, or different hairstyles other than trends, that will set you apart from others.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
The pandemic and the inflation have thrown a monkey wrench in business. But I have learned that people will pay for what they want. My beauty agency is not as busy as we were before the inflation because of our prices, but we still have a good enough of wonderful clients that’s willing to pay for the best. That’s what they tell us. We service a lot of brides-to-be, and their hair and makeup are very important to them for their big day. With our reputation they have total trust in us and they’re never disappointed.
