We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
Thanks so much for having us! Neither one of us has ever shied away from a challenge or been afraid to take a leap of faith. The first leap we took together was 15 years ago, at our first college, when we decided to transfer to universities in Boston. I think the biggest thing we’ve learned over the years is that any risk we take where things don’t work out exactly the way we expected isn’t a failure, but an opportunity to learn and improve. All of the experience from then on unexpectedly led to us starting our business together!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Absolutely! The Creative Agency, or as we lovely refer to it “The Agency”, is a talent and marketing agency based outside of Boston, MA. We help influencers, models, musicians, and other creatives work with brands in meaningful ways. As a creator, I (Taylor) struggled working with other agencies, but with Meghan as a partner, we felt we could do it better! The Agency is now on a mission to redefine what an influencer talent agency looks like, bringing a mix of top notch professionalism and communication with a lot of heart. One of the ways we are doing that is by creating an influencer community in Boston/New England through their influencer networking events including our “Sweatworking” event, Booktok Cocktail party, and fashion shows (dates to be announced)!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If we had to break it down to the top three skills that matter most we would say it’s interpersonal skills, confidence, and the ability to negotiate.
Interpersonal skills are super important for gaining trust from your clients and community. As part of this, we focus on being extremely communicative and this is one of the qualities we think our clients appreciate the most when working with us.
We find confidence is key to execution and finding success in business. While neither one of us had a background in marketing, both of us recognize that our previous experience, both professional and personal, have been far more important than a specific degree. Having the confidence to pursue a career that is outside of what we went to school for and KNOW that we can figure it out, we think has been instrumental in our success.
Negotiation is one of those skills that you are always honing. With Meghan’s background as a teacher and my (Taylor) background in operations, we developed the ability to know when to toe a hard line and when to give in a little, which is important in securing fair and worthwhile brand deals for their clients.
Advice we would give would be to remember your own value and you are always bringing something to the table! And also fake it until you make it (it’s the only way to overcome imposter syndrome)! Lastly, trust yourself. We’re big believers in going with your gut.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely! We are all about collaboration over competition! We love to work with small local (New England) companies for events. We also would love to work with other agencies as well as companies who do PR for brands nationwide!
