We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Clemons a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I would say my resilience comes from my past failures. Each time I’ve stumbled, I’ve learned something that can’t be taught any other way. Failing can be rough and lead to a lot of uncertainty and doubt, but I’ve come to value those moments. They’ve taught me some of my most important lessons and given me what I needed to bounce back. It’s all part of the journey!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a makeup artist located in Baltimore, MD. I love being a makeup artist because it’s an incredible opportunity to uplift others through self-love. I love connecting with my clients and getting to know a little about their lives. I also offer silent appointments for the girlies that just want to relax, listen to music, and vibe. I work hard to create a comfortable, safe environment, where you leave exactly how you imagined. Come sit with me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say the three main qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were flexibility, authenticity, and determination:
Flexibility: You quickly learn that you can’t plan for everything in this business! Being flexible has led me to some amazing opportunities I never expected. It’s all about rolling with the punches and seeing where things take you.
Authenticity: Just being yourself is so important! I love connecting with my clients, and it often turns into a real heart-to-heart. It feels great to be that safe space for them, and you never know what incredible connections can come from those chats.
Determination: Commitment is everything. It’s easy to stay motivated when you love what you do, but running a business means diving into all the nitty-gritty stuff too—like admin work and inventory. Staying determined through it all is what helps your business grow and thrive!
Advice for anyone early in their journey: Just stay focused. You know what you want. You’re more than capable of achieving it. Once I truly understood I had no limits, my world changed! Stay with it and trust the process.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The biggest lesson my parents taught me is definitely independence. They always encouraged me to think for myself, this independence has made me resourceful and fostered strong problem-solving skills, allowing me to see challenges as opportunities.
This mindset also influences my work as a makeup artist. It lets me tap into my creativity and build real connections with my clients. I’m super grateful for that lesson, as it continues to guide me in both my personal and professional life.
