We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Florence a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My mom was always positive, no matter the circumstances she was facing. Unfortunately, she fought colon cancer for many years before passing in 2006. Whenever I feel down or pessimistic about something, I try to remember her positive attitude, even when facing something as impossible as cancer. She was the ultimate example for me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I graduated from San Clemente High School in 2006. Shortly after graduation, I departed for South America for a two-year mission service for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That experience laid a foundation for my work ethic and empathetic personality.
Upon returning home, I tracked down Heather, my high school sweetheart and the love of my life, and convinced her to marry him. We completed undergraduate programs at BYU, Heather with a degree in Early Childhood Development, and me from BYU’s Marriott School of Management.
We found our way back to Southern California, working as a healthcare executive director. A few years into my healthcare career, I followed a passion for entrepreneurship. I started Transitional Care Solutions, supporting families in navigating the challenges of caring for an aging loved one, specifically, understanding and finding appropriate care options based on someone’s care, location, and budget needs. It’s hard to believe, but I started TCS over eight years ago. Now, I have two additional full-time partners also helping families, and together, we help hundreds of families each year.
Apart from TCS, a friend and I started a side business, CEUs.R.EZ, that provides online accredited continuing education for healthcare professionals. In many ways, the two companies overlap. Meeting so many great healthcare leaders and helping them stay current in their professional licenses has been a ton of fun.
Most importantly, my wife and I enjoy dedicating time to raising our three daughters, twin nine-year-olds and a three-year-old. We love movie nights, summer beach days, Disneyland, good food, and family travel.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Worth ethic, empathy, and optimism.
Starting a business is not for the faint of heart. You don’t have a boss looking over your shoulder to make sure you’re working. It’s all on you! Without a solid work ethic, you won’t get very far.
Empathy might not be for everyone, but in my line of work, listening to the challenges families are facing, if you can’t feel empathy for another’s situation, you will block your ability to truly help them. You have to put yourself in their shoes to best make recommendations that fit their needs.
And then, for any entrepreneur or business starter hopeful, stay optimistic. You’ll have so many ups and downs. It will undoubtedly take longer to get going than you expect. Stay patient. Don’t give up. Stay optimistic. It will happen!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Taking on partners/ employees can be scary, but I’m so glad I took that step. They have become a huge help in overcoming challenges and building a better business. We each have different perspectives. We each have different experiences as we connect with and help families. These different perspectives and experiences become a powerful formula for improvement when shared with each other.
