We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Hutton, MBA recently and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
As a young woman in an industry dominated by “finance bros” – I’ve had to unlearn the idea that I had to dress like a traditional financial advisor to be taken seriously in this world. Unlike traditional pant suits or heels – you’ll find me in a t-shirt, jeans, and my signature BB yellow sneakers. Why? Because staying approachable matters. Most of my clients feel overwhelmed by traditional finance spaces, and I want to be someone who makes them feel seen, not judged.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am proud to be Kansas City’s one and only Budget Consultant who helps millennial individuals and families maximize their income via a Taylor-Made for you budget. Whether the goal is buying a home, getting married, starting a family, taking that dream vacation, paying down debt, or simply understanding where your money is going – I’m here to help make it possible and fun.
I am also proud to be Kansas City’s one and only Financial Wedding Advisor and the creator of the KC Wedding Budget Guide. I work to help engaged couples financially plan for the wedding of their dreams and bee-yond into married life.
What excites me most is helping people uncover their spending habits and showing them how to take control of their finances without shame or judgment. My work is deeply personal, as it stems from losing my father and witnessing the devastating impact financial stress can have on a family. That’s why I created Budget Bee LLC: to make sure no child has to bury their parent because of medical bills or money struggles.
I like to think of myself as your budgeting bestie who shows up every week with a calculator and a plan. Budgeting might feel scary at first – but here’s the truth: you can’t build wealth until you know what’s coming in and what’s going out.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back – the three qualities that were the most impactful in my journey to be a Budget Consultant are:
First – you need to be able to listen to your clients with an open mind, and I mean really listen. This can be challenging when you start hearing their story and, after a few seconds, you already want to recommend solutions before they’ve finished. It is very important to listen to them, without interrupting, so you can build them a budget based on their lifestyle and not their bank statement.
Secondly – you must be able to empathize with your clients and work to uncover the psychological reason behind their spending, all while remaining unbiased. This means letting them talk about their spending, but also they WHY they felt the need to swipe their debit card.
Finally – continuing my education is essential so I can provide clients with up-to-date financial planning strategies, and also educate them on how these strategies work and why they matter – rather than just telling them what to do.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal budget consulting client is a millennial individual or family living in the Kansas City metro who’s ready to fix their financial leaks and start maximizing their income to achieve their wildest dreams – whether that’s buying a house, planning a wedding, paying down debt, or finally feeling in control of their money. Most of the clients I serve bring in around $5,000 a month, but I truly believe financial freedom is for everyone, so I welcome all income levels.
What really matters to me isn’t the dollar amount – it’s the attitude. I love working with people who can laugh a little, don’t take life too seriously, and want to make progress without shame. I make budgeting fun and stress-free – so my dream client is someone who doesn’t see a budget as a punishment, but rather as a plan to help them spend money this month on what matters most.
If you’re ready to get real about your money and still smile through the process, you’ll fit right in with the hive.
