Meet Taylor Langston

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Langston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Taylor , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I am Tay Melodies, from Philadelphia and New Jersey but Im based in Los Angeles. I started my DJ journey in 2022 and ever since I felt like I have found my purpose. The simple hobby I picked up on a whim because I knew I always wanted to learn has completely changed my life. It has bought me so much happiness, joy, and community. For someone who was a self described loner, the community and connections Ive made during this journey are everything to me. It started with “Your Favorite Late Night Mix”, where I did my first set in front of people. Everyone was so supportive and encouraging. The space they cultivated is so warm and welcoming and makes you feel free to be yourself. My first live hour set was at Moonflower Mondays at the Falls. Which is like a home base where Ive been able to test my sound gain my confidence. Both of these spaces are filled with creatives that get collaborate and share ideas. Its so beautiful to me and inspired me to want to do the same. I created the rhythm rave to be a space that can foster that sense of freedom and community. The Rhythm Rave is an immersive event designed to celebrate house, dance, and club music.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m Tay Melodies, formerly known as DJ Eatfries. Originally from Philadelphia and South Jersey, Growing up on the East Coast gave me a deep affinity for club and dance music, and I specialize in music from the Black diaspora. I blend sounds from Afro beats, soca, Latin, dancehall, and reggae with styles of Black American music like house, neo-soul, Baltimore club, Jersey club, New Orleans bounce, hip-hop, and R&B. I also have a love for indie pop and alternative rock, influenced by the Myspace and Tumblr era.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I’d say three things have been essential in my journey. First, practice is everything. Spending hours perfecting my craft, experimenting with new techniques, and developing my unique sound has been invaluable. Secondly, going out and listening to other DJs helped me understand the art of reading a crowd, mixing styles, and building energy in a set. It also introduced me to a community of talented, supportive people who became mentors, friends, and collaborators. Lastly, I learned the importance of just going for it—even if I didn’t feel entirely ready. Taking that leap, booking gigs, and putting myself out there gave me confidence and helped me grow faster than I ever could have if I’d waited for the ‘perfect moment

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My dad is a bing influence on my dj journey because he gave me the love of music. My dad was a producer and always had a homemade studio in our basement. I grew up with bass coming through the walls night and day. He introduced me to so many artists and was actually the first to introduce me to my favorite rapper Kendrick lamar with his very first mix tape, overly dedicated. He bought me DC and DC players, MP3 and showed me how to download music for free. My dad was the coolest guy ever and our love for music is what has helped me change my life and after he has passed and I know he would be so proud and mind blown by everything Ive been able to do.
