We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tekeshia Allen-Ebron. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tekeshia below.
Tekeshia, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
If asked this question years ago, I wouldn’t have known how to answer it. I didn’t even think I was resilient. I thought that the things I had to endure weren’t as difficult as what others had been through. Now, looking back over my life, I’ve been through many things that cultivated my resilience. I lost my mother as a young child, I lost my grandmother who assumed the responsibility of raising me after the loss of my mother, two years ago in the middle of nursing school. I’ve struggled in romantic relationships as most people have. I’m also an infertility warrior. I worked in an OBGYN office caring for new mothers while actively miscarrying a baby I desired more than anything. This is where my resilience was cultivated. Resilience isn’t just surviving after adversity but adapting and adapting well, and then using the wisdom and strength you gained to make it through time and time again.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
First, I’m a WIFE! I’m married to Mike Ebron, Jr, and together, we are the senior leaders of the Prayer Club Ministry. I’m also a nurse. I graduated as an LPN in 2014, but bridged over to an RN in 2022, and then went back to school to become an RN, BSN. Shortly, I plan on returning to school and becoming a nurse practitioner. I currently work in a hospital as a Pediatric nurse. The most special part about being a Peds nurse is being able to touch the lives of children while bringing hope and comfort to both them and their families, but it can be very challenging. We’re dealing with precious cargo here! In my spare time, I enjoy crafting. Crafting for me consists of making t-shirts and tumblers. I find this therapeutic in tough times and have even used it as an additional source of income.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities that have been most impactful on my journey are my faith, the ability to show empathy, and being a forever learner. I haven’t always had self-confidence, but I have learned to have faith in God because he shows up for me without fail. Two scriptures that have helped me along the way are, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” – Philippians 4:13 (KJV), and 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV) which says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”. Together these two verses let me know that when I don’t feel like I have the strength or confidence to fulfill a task, his grace and power will fill in the gap. When I am honest with Him about what I can’t do, it allows Him to show up. Showing empathy is one of the greatest skills a person can carry. It is the ability to see and hear what others don’t. It is important to consider a person’s experiences and emotions when providing care for them, When you’re able to empathize with a person, you gain insight into what worries and concerns a person has. This is critical because as a nurse, you take care of people from all walks of life, and being comfortable with you is vital. Lastly, be a forever learner. Look for ways to grow. Self-study. Take certification exams. Get a new degree. Always be open to finding ways to advance your career. Each of these skills can be strengthened by being in a community with others who are like-minded! There is a doctor for whom I worked who was a man of faith, an avid learner, and despite his feelings about a person’s background, provided the best care to each patient. Get a mentor and see how your life changes! Being able to witness that has helped me become a better person and nurse.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The greatest obstacle I face as mentioned earlier is not always having confidence in myself. There are times I struggle with imposter syndrome. I have always pushed myself very hard to achieve the goals I’ve set. I have several degrees, and I’ve received many awards and accolades from both my jobs and family. However, I still struggle with feeling successful inwardly, despite my external success. To overcome this, I made a vow to God to come to him first in prayer with all that I have in mind to do and then wait until I hear from Him before pursuing. If he permits me to move forward, I will do it. Where I have shrunk down in previous seasons and turned down opportunities in the past, it ends here. I recently accepted a charge nurse position on my unit and a speaking engagement within the ministry. I’m overcoming by standing on God’s word and knowing he won’t let me fail.
