Meet Tekulve Jackson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tekulve Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tekulve , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

Nothing has ever come easily to me; success has always felt out of reach. To make progress, I had to work hard, learn quickly, and push through challenges. Quitting wasn’t an option, so I developed the skills to create my own resources and opportunities.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m the creator of Backstreet, a TV series inspired by small-town life that captures relatable challenges and triumphs but uses drama, entertainment, excitement, and suspense to tell it.

Co-founded with my wife, Theresia, a mental health counselor, Backstreet is a family-driven project, joined by talents like Paralympian Regas Woods and multimedia expert Christin Hayes. We want to show that creative opportunities, even acting, are possible right here.

Starting as a Christian rapper, I shifted to filmmaking to bring storytelling to life. Now streaming on Tubi, Amazon Prime Video, and Roku TV, Backstreet is all about community, growth, and creating together.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three key qualities have shaped my journey: resilience, resourcefulness, and a commitment to community.

Resilience – Starting Backstreet required perseverance. We self-funded and faced many challenges, but staying determined kept us moving forward. For those starting out, resilience is essential; setbacks are part of the process. Practice patience and persistence, and remember that every challenge is a chance to learn.

Resourcefulness – Shifting from music to filmmaking meant adapting quickly, learning new skills, and creating opportunities on a budget. For newcomers, don’t wait for the “perfect” resources—use what’s available, and build your vision piece by piece.

Commitment to Community – Backstreet is about bringing people together and creating local opportunities. Supporting others and collaborating can be invaluable in any creative journey. Seek connections, network, and remember that your community is a powerful resource.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

In the past 12 months, we have gotten more creative and the storylines in the season have become more exciting and entertaining. Because of this, the second season is about to be even better.
