Meet Teresa Johnson

We recently connected with Teresa Johnson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Teresa, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

As a yoga teacher and student, I look for ways to give of myself, to make people feel good and connect with them. One of the characters in my book, Boneyard Café, says, “The light needs the darkness to shine, and the darkness needs the light to exist.” We all have light and dark within us, but it is learning to balance the two that makes all the difference in our treatment of others.
When I started my yoga teacher training, I didn’t know how much I would enjoy making a difference. I thought that I would enjoy the training, because I love doing yoga, but it became so much more. As my clients found their bodies moving with more ease or discovering peace in meditation, I also found purpose and meaning in my life.
I focus on easing the anxiety of a busy life, breathing, sending love to the self and the world in my meditations. I post many of them online, hoping followers will see them and breathe easier that day.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a dark fantasy/sci fi author with several published books. My dark fantasy, Boneyard Café, released in 2024. My dark fantasy meets romance novella, Dark Matter, released in June 2025. The dark fantasy/sci fi sequel in the Boneyard Café series, The Seven, released September 19, 2025, followed by my apocalyptic short story, Dust City Inferno, in the eleven author anthology, When the Wind Howls, on October 1, 2025. My previously published book, Fire Island, was written as part of my Master’s degree requirements.

Coming next year, readers will have more novellas, anthologies, and novels to look forward to. One work in progress is an exploration of love and self-discovery in a dark and dangerous, yet sultry, setting. Another is the third installment of the Boneyard Café series, which will answer the question from book two : will Lee and Mick find a way out of their year with the hunter demon?

When I’m not writing or reading, I teach yoga. Because of that, I incorporate mindfulness and yoga philosophy into my novels and social media pages, and my goal is to create a community with my readers.

I offer readers dark fantasy with urban and sci fi elements, interesting, diverse characters and creatures, and the chance to unravel my worlds over my series and standalone novels. In my stories, readers will find friendship, romantic love, and sisterly love. Lastly, they’ll get to know creepy, cruel villains and see what happens when good goes up against evil.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As an author, one of the most important things I’ve kept close to my heart is the quote “we rise by lifting others.” Having a support system in place is important. I am part of a wide network of authors striving to market our work and find our readers on social media; part of our success lies in our ability to work together. Making collaborative posts, hosting giveaways, and reading and reviewing one another’s books helps us find readers. Gathering in shared online spaces to give one another advice is priceless. We are growing together as authors, and it’s a beautiful thing to see.

In relation to that, I have honed technical skills I never thought I’d need to develop. I run my own website, hype team, and ARC teams, and I make graphics for my social media accounts, website, and newsletter.

Lastly, though I worked as a newspaper reporter in the past, I have now learned to turn the tables and become the interviewee. I’ve appeared on podcasts, in interviews, at book conventions, and in author features. Learning to talk about myself, to promote my work has been an adventure, to say the least, but I am becoming more comfortable with it all the time. I want readers to know I have something to offer that they’ll enjoy, and that involves getting the word out there about my books.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always looking for readers to join my hype and ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) teams, review my books, subscribe to my newsletter, and interact on the member pages of my website, which will soon move to a shared (with another author’s hype and ARC teams) Discord server. We’re going to offer a variety of fun and informative channels.
I am always happy to connect with authors who’d like to collaborate on projects and posts or to celebrate one another’s work and chat.
I’d love to create a local network of authors as well.
