Meet Terrill Carter

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terrill Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Terrill with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
In my opinion a healthy work ethic is very important when accomplishing goals and dreams! I remember arriving in Los Angeles in 2011… I hit the ground running! I auditioned for every open mic and talent show I could find. I knew if I showed up I would get the job… So I made it a part of my daily routine to constantly find gigs and show up to every audition and musical job I could find. I found comfort in being uncomfortable… Eliminate fear and show up for you just as you would the people you surround yourself with!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a Singer/ Songwriter currently performing on the central coast, Los Angeles, & the Bayarea. I’m currently being featured on a documentary entitled “Drumbeat of Humanity”… Produced by Yulia Maluta, dancer and creative leader in `the Santa Barbara dance community! I was honored to not only be featured in the film, but created a song for the documentary called “Rhythm of Humanity” (Availible on all platforms) . The song and film showcases how music connects us, and how no matter what artistic career you’re involved in music and sound has a unique and postive way of bringing us all together. In addition I host a Friday Night Live Karaoke on my YouTube channel Terrill (teamterrill) to my growing fanbase that tune in from all over the world. I feature upcoming artist, established artist, and musicians with many different talents. I look forward to streaming Friday nights, it’s an escape from the day to day hustle and it’s such a good time!
I’m also honored to have projects in the work with award winning singer/ songwriter Jacky Jack White … I covered his song on my debut solo album Feels Like This entitled “Exchange of Hearts” and we connected and have been collaborating ever since.
My future goals are to create a second album soon! I released my debut solo album last year on February 17th… I was honored to work along side legendary producer Preston Glass, along with producers Christian Belnavis, and Bruce Carter.
I would also love to create my passion project which is an inspirational music book for children.
I feel the sky is the limit, it’s so easy to dream but working hard and focusing on making your dreams a reality is the key to success!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that has been impactful to my musical journey … Dedication to practicing, persistence to continue to audition even when I didn’t get the job, and the willingness to network with producers and other musicians to gain as much knowledge on creating and crafting music! I practice for days and hours when I’m getting ready for a show. Practicing to me shows professionalism and builds confidence … It simply makes you stand out. While pursuing a music career in Los Angeles the competition is vast. Staying persistence is key to a successful music career. Not every gig is meant for you, but if you keep showing up you will get work and keeping work is inevitable!
Networking has played such a huge role in my musical career. It allows me to work with others that are very passionate about creating music; at the same time gain access to opportunities from producers in need of vocals for their musical projects. Networking creates avenues for artist to make potential money and a professional way to get the word out about an upcoming project or brand.
My advice to upcoming singer/songwriters that are early in their careers… Don’t expect anything to be handed to you! You must set goals, then take steps to complete the goals you’ve set. Some days you will feel like you can’t go on… You may need to take a little break to reset. Don’t let anyone tell you what they think your journey should look like… It’s YOUR journey! Lastly, what you give is what you get… If you’re only giving 50 percent then that is what others will see. Give it your best every time, and you will see unwavering success!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I have a work hard play hard mentality in life. I take on multiple music projects at a time… From stage performing to demo recording. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I like to go to places that are higher up in elevation. Like hiking destinations with peaks that has a view of the whole city. One of my favorite hiking trails are located in the mountains of Santa Barbara its called “Lizards Mouth” it’s very secluded and depending on the time of the day there’s not many people around and its very peaceful. I also set 30 mins morning and night to sit in silence. Meditation has been a huge stress reliever… It’s changed my life!
