We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terry Nunn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terry, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My name is Terry Nunn and my mother’s dying wish was for me to slow down and pursue my love for photography, so in January of 2022, I purchased my first camera and began my journey by spending countless hours watching YouTube videos, reading articles about how best to set up the camera for various types of photography and following several different photographers on social media to look at various styles of photography. I have always found myself at home amidst the beauty of the great outdoors and have been on a transformative journey ever since, capturing fleeting moments and eternalizing them through my lens. Photography has become more than just a hobby; it is my way of sharing the world’s hidden gems and unique stories with others. My work is a testament to the serenity and awe that nature instills in us, and through each photograph, I aim to evoke emotions and inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Every photograph I take is a labor of love, a moment of connection with the world around us. By sharing my work, I hope to inspire a greater appreciation for the natural wonders that surround us and to encourage others to see the beauty in every moment. Whether you are a seasoned art collector or new to the world of photography, I am excited to share my vision with you and invite you to bring a piece of the wild, wonderful world into your home.
I am thrilled to offer my photographs in a variety of styles and mediums, designed to suit every aesthetic and space. Whether you’re drawn to the sleek modernity of metal prints, the timeless elegance of canvas, the rustic charm of wood, or the classic appeal of traditional prints, there is something for every art lover in my collection. Each piece is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of nature are preserved and presented in the most striking way possible.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Photography has really made me slow down and focus on what is in front of me instead of constantly worrying about what is around the next corner. I now have the ability to capture a moment or subject with patience and adaptability because as a wildlife nature photographer, I don’t ever want to disturb my subject. Being a humble sponge and constantly adapting how I frame subjects, post-process in Lightroom and overall creative awareness has helped me improve my work in a short time. I have always had a keen eye for detail and that has carried over to the overall composition and finish of my photos that allows me to see things others don’t.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest challenge in turning my photography into a sustainable revenue stream is getting my work in front of potential buyers. I recently built an e-commerce website and am trying to figure out SEO, Google Ads, social media, and other strategies to drive customers to my work. I have grown my Instagram following to 20,000, but converting those followers into buyers has proven difficult, and I’m still working on that. Currently, I sell more to friends, family, and at local pop-up markets than online, but I remain hopeful that my online sales will pick up.
