Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terry Urban. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Terry with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I grew up in the midwest town of Cleveland, Ohio. It’s a hard working blue collar town. I grew up in a family of construction workers and carpenters so I found out real quick that hard work is the only way I was going to get by.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Terry Urban and I am an artist. I’d say most of my work consists of paintings which is very therapeutic for me. I spent most of my life wrapped up in nightlife as a DJ so to venture off to this new creative outlet is a life saver for me. If I didn’t chose art, I would probably be dead by now. Nightlife and partying was killing me slowly and I need something to fulfill me creatively. So I chose painting.
For the past 7 years now I have been building my brand and collaborating with all different kinds of brands that Im interested in. Im beyond stoked to have turned my life around with art and that I can actually make a living as well with it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As far as an art career is concerned,
Obviously knowledge of the subject is most impactful. Im huge into research. If I find an artist I like, I will spend weeks researching them and learning their traits.
I think a great skill to have is to also be able to sell yourself. I was terrible at this when I started but I was able to learn quickly on how to become a self entrepreneur.
The next step is once you have a brand, learn that you can’t do everything. Hire the right people to help you with your brand and you stay on the creative side so you don’t get burnt out.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They always encouraged me to be myself. My mother would always say “You can do anything you want if you just put your mind to it”. Its cliche I know, but it worked for me.
