We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tessa Small a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tessa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
This is a great topic given the focus of my practice, Purpose and Passion Coaching, and what has led me to this point in my journey. After 20 plus years of working in many different aspects of the wellness and holistic world, I finally feel like I’m in a place to bring my knowledge and experience together to truly help others. What I believe to be the foundation of any healing path is really connecting to yourself on a deeper level, looking at things, experiences or aspects of who we truly are in this short human experience. In my practice, Divine Alchemy, my Purpose is driven by may Passion and the endless possibilities that all of us have within.
Through my own struggles of being a young single mother and facing some serious autoimmune issues, I was for lack of a better term, shoved into having to learn more about how to take care of myself on another level that Western Medicine just couldn’t provide. I was raised very blessed to have had a more holistic and mindful influence from my parents, whom in their day were considered to be the more radical or “hippy” type. In my opinion they were actually just trying to live a life and raise their children to be connected to their bodies, intuition and the earth. I quickly learned that this was not the norm as to what kids around me were experiencing. So, when faced with health issues I knew there was more to learn and through educating myself and learning from experienced Practitioners around me. I then stepped into being a massage therapist and absorbing as much information about holistic practices, the energies and physiology of the body, nutrition, supplementation, Herbalism, and spiritual mindsets, to not only take care of myself but to share what I knew with anyone that would listen.
So, this is a bit about how I found my Purpose and continue to learn so that I may share and help others that are willing and wanting to make the most of this life. Thank you for taking time to read this.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My practice, Divine Alchemy, embraces these aspects of transformation through empowerment. Having a very strong Passion around reminding others that healing is possible, finding joy and happiness are possible and we all have the ability to choose what we truly desire in this life, I have found my Purpose of reminding others of their greatness. This is my way of fighting the broken systems and creating connection of community through self sufficiency and taking care of each other, which I believe to be the purpose of this life. Most of what clients (or anyone for that matter) need to be reminded of is their greatness. That they are capable, all we need to work on is the belief or thought around how they see themselves and this usually reflects on what they were taught at a young age or through their life experiences.
I’m always striving to learn more and incorporate new modalities and tools, all of which I have had a personal experience with. Currently, I offer many modalities that meet others where they are and through coaching and building rapport, we take a journey to reconnect to themselves and break down limiting beliefs, set realistic goals, learn how to listen to their intuition and TRUST IT. Through this journey, I am honored to hold space for any person that is willing and ready to connect to their true selves on a deeper level and create the journey they desire.
I offer, Purpose and Passion coaching (to define where they are and where they want to go), Hypnotherapy (guided imagery to connect to the subconscious on a deeper level), bodywork (I’ve been a Massage Therapist for 22 years and combine many modalities to work with he body to release what is no longer needed), custom herbal blends (for tea or smoke bringing ritual through preventative herbs that balance, relax and support), Psychedelic guide (working with plant medicines as a support and deeper connection to their higher purpose), and I offer different group circles for retreats and resetting through balancing experiences.
I currently offer in group retreats both in studio and on-site. These retreats are customizable to create the retreat you desire for yourself and your attendees. I also offer in person one on one sessions which can be scheduled through my site. This month (Nov. 24th) and every other month, I’m holding my Elevate Mindful Immersion which is a cacao ceremony infused with a Microdose and includes a guided meditation accompanied by a sound bath. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the most impactful things that has been a guide in my journey has been working with others that have more experience and knowledge than myself. Recognizing what we can learn from each other is a huge part of this wellness community and we should all strive to continue to learn from the the wisdom of others. I have had some really amazing mentors and people that I respect because of their passion for sharing what they know.
A second area that was impactful for my development was stepping into the unknown. Knowing that I have a calling and stepping into the path of what my heart is guiding me towards no matter how scary, is what has built the trust in myself that I needed. We may not know what the journey looks like but if we can tap into what we know in the present and listen to our intuition, we can truly have the Heros Journey that is meant for us.
I would say the third most impactful experience that I embrace and know as the foundation of working with others, is knowing that we don’t always need to know the answers. As Practitioners, all we truly need is to hold space for others to feel safe so that they process, share, release what they need to. And if or when they are ready to embrace your suggestions, then we can truly be impactful. It’s also why it’s so important for us to take care of ourselves, practicing what we preach, if you will. Self development and care is the only way we can sustain being a service provider, so holding space for ourselves is just as important as holding space for others.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I went into this year with really having a strong sense of practicing with intention in all areas of my life. Revisiting my personal and professional journey and ways that I may not be living with mindful intention has been very impactful and has created more space for what is meant.
Personally, I have defined more boundaries of how I define myself in any relationship including with myself. Listening to what I need, making more space for self care and development, doing more of what fuels my soul and doing all of this unapologetically.
Professionally, I also shifted several areas that I realized weren’t reciprocating the energy that I was giving out. Defining my roles in others projects, defining the clients that I felt are most in alignment and being very mindful of who I choose to collaborate or work with. I’ve learned to trust that if something feels forced or not easily flowing, that it’s not meant for me or in this current moment. Trusting your intuition is one of the most valuable tools you can develop as an entrepreneur.
