Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tetza. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tetza, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’m pretty sure that imposter syndrome isn’t something that you necessarily overcome- or if anyone has they’re probably much older and wiser than I am. But from what I know, rather than being something you overcome, it’s something you battle with every day. Some days you win the battle and some days you don’t. There are days when I am extremely proud of my work and can see my path to where I want to be, but there are also days where I am really down on myself and feel like my dreams are entirely out of reach. The industry is ridiculously difficult and while it would be ideal if I could thrust ahead without any doubts and insecurities, that’s not realistic. When I’m feeling a lack of confidence, venting about it with close friends is always helpful. Just getting it out and having a good cry can help set me back in a more neutral space. At the end of the day, even if I feel like the biggest failure/imposter/piece of you know what – I know I still won’t give up. No matter how much I believe in myself on any given day, I’m still out here hustling. It’s all you can do. Try to keep your focus on the love for the art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Bio: Originally from Los Angeles and now Brooklyn-based, Tetza impresses with clever and empowering lyricism, smooth walls of self-arranged background vocals, and a soothing yet surprisingly powerful voice.
Entering the industry as a professional freelance songwriter and session vocalist, Tetza is now fully pursuing and focusing on her own solo pop music – with strong RnB influence sprinkled with Y2K nostalgia. Upon the release of her debut EP: Summer Reading, Tetza has recently performed at venues such as DROM and THE MEADOWS, and has received praise in multiple online publications for both her music and accompanying visuals – elevating self-produced bedroom pop to the next level. For what she currently lacks in budget, she makes up for with creativity and skillful dance performance.
I make music because I love it more than anything else. It sounds cheesy but writing is how I communicate, and singing is how I meditate. Being creative feels like I’m being my truest self.
I’m currently rolling out my second EP- title tba. The first two singles “kick rocks” and “alter ego” are out now on all streaming platforms. More to come very soon!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I grew up taking voice lessons pretty consistently so having formal vocal training is has definitely helped me develop important skills in terms of maintaining a healthy voice.
I’m an insanely passionate person. My passion is really what drives me, and I think without it I wouldn’t have been able to create what I have so far or what I will create in the future. I’m passionate about my loved ones, tv shows, other music artists, and then that passion inspires me to create. I’m a nerd and I geek out when I love something and just want to share it with others.
If there’s something I want to learn how to do, like a specific dance move/vocal technique/production skill, I can usually make it happen. I’m a good learner and can usually learn any skill I want to when I set my mind to it.
For those early in their journey, I would just encourage to consume as much music as possible, love it as hard as you can, and then try to do it yourself. Don’t judge yourself, don’t edit too much yet, just do it. Feel the joy of creating and focus on that before getting too technical with it. You’ll know when it’s time to start getting constructively critical.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Definitely navigating social media and marketing is something I continue to struggle with. I don’t have a knack for tik tok/IG/social media/etc, so I find it really challenging to grow a presence- which is extremely important these days. I struggle to feel motivated to make that kind of content, when I really would love to just focus on the art. That’s not the world we live in though, so I am always trying to challenge my mindset and find joy in marketing despite my hesitance. If you can’t beat em, join em. If anyone is interested in helping me manage my socials and music marketing, I’m so down.
