Hello The Adventure Crews, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
We like to think of it as a calculated risk. We’re in full realization that a sailboat is a depreciating asset so the risk is real. When you walk into a casino with $300 in your pocket knowing that you may walk out with zero left, you’ve taken into account the risk and that’s kind of what we did with this boat.
We went into this knowing that the worst case scenario is that we lose $300,000, which is a lot of money but we would lose it trying to chase our dreams. The worst case scenario is that we go back to living the exact same life we lived before buying a sailboat, starting a YouTube channel, and sailing the world. A lot of people talk about one day I’m going to do this or that. Well, we didn’t want to talk about it. We wanted to do it. What’s scarier to us is not taking the risk. Sitting at our desks Monday through Friday doing the exact same thing week after week and living an unfilled life.
We didn’t want to wait until retirement to chase our dreams of seeing the world. There’s never a right time, you’ll never have enough money, the only time is now, the present. We firmly believe that the real risk is waiting because who knows what tomorrow holds? It’s all about grabbing life by the horns and going for it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We’re Cole and Emily Crews, also known as The Adventure Crews. We are passionate storytellers and adventure seekers traveling the Caribbean on our sailing catamaran. Our mission is to capture the world through our camera lens and take you on incredible journeys to places you may never have been before while introducing you to fascinating people and their unique stories along the way.
As we fulfill our own dreams of traveling the world together, we want to inspire you to embrace your own dreams and pursue a life filled with purpose. We firmly believe that everyone and everything has a story worth sharing, and we’re dedicated to uncovering those stories and bringing them to you through our videos on our YouTube channel.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Believe in yourself and always follow your heart. If there’s something on your mind from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed, you need to listen to that, believe in yourself, and go for it! For us, every waking moment was spent figuring out how to make this dream of travel and adventure a reality. We have now built out multiple streams of revenue and are well on our way to making this a sustainable lifestyle.
This may go without saying but we believe understanding and embracing your strengths is a skill in itself. As a former TV News Anchor, Emily spent almost a decade telling other people’s stories so she knew her skillset would be in documenting and telling our story. For Cole, his background is in construction management and he thrives in problem-solving. Living on a boat, there’s always a problem to solve. Find your strengths and play to them.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
This last 12 months has been filled with an immeasurable amount of growth.
Personally, we’ve grown as a couple in learning how to work together in business. We have learned what an asset it is to play to each other’s strengths and pick up each others weaknesses. In less than a year, we have become one of the fastest growing sailing Youtube channels and we are so excited for the many opportunities that will come along with that.
