We were lucky to catch up with The Band Kris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have The Band Kris with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Pursuing your dreams, especially when your dream is so big and unrealistic to most people, requires a strong work ethic. We never had a plan B. Our music career was always a non-negotiable for us, and that meant we would have to work hard for it. Of course, people called us dreamers, and told us to get a ‘real job,’ which only fueled our fire and forced us to work harder. It’s an ongoing obsession to constantly move the needle closer to our goals, especially since it’s for something we have been so obsessed with since we were kids.
There’s something magical about being so certain on what you want to do with your life that it doesn’t even cross your mind to consider any other career path. It’s like we have blinders on, but in the best way possible.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Heyyoo it’s Jami and Dani! We are a sister pop-music duo known as The Band Kris. Our journey is deeply rooted in family, as we named our band in honor of our brother Kris, who was an incredible musician but passed away before fully living out his musical dreams. Naming our band after him allows us to keep his spirit alive through our music.
One of the most special things about our band is that it isn’t just about the two of us – it’s about Kris too. We feel his presence in everything we do, and we often get signs from him that remind us he’s with us on this journey. This connection makes our music feel much bigger than just our own ambitions; it’s a way to stay close to him.
In terms of our music, we are both singer-songwriters. Jami plays the guitar, and Dani plays the piano/keyboard. Creating music together has been our passion for as long as we can remember. Being sisters and best friends, as well as bandmates, brings a unique dynamic to our songwriting, and performances. We currently have 7 songs on all streaming platforms, but our songbook is much larger… so, we wanted to make sure our fans had access to hear all our raw original songs, even if that meant it’s just a video of us singing in our bedroom. Our Youtube Channel became a place to share our music beyond the produced singles!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. The ability to bounce back quickly. We have had so many things happen along the way that most would probably die of embarrassment, (we didn’t say it was easy to bounce back haha) but we would get over it quickly and bounce back. When we played a show to literally an empty audience, our ego got a little bit bruised but we played the show anyway.
2. You must know who you are before others try to tell you who you are! We were told to change our band name, conform to a specific image, even told that it will be too confusing to have two lead singers so only one of us should sing. All of these were non-negotiable for us so knowing who you are and sticking to that is key!
3. Our vision/mindset might have played the biggest role. We refused to alter our huge dreams no matter how many times we were told to be realistic. Trust us, people will try and lower your standards, give you a more realistic dream. They will try and re-dream your dream for you, but it’s not their dream! So, our biggest advice is to keep dreaming big just like you did when you were a little kid. And keep that dream alive by continuing to pursue it with all you got!
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Oh man, we love our mom and dad so much. They have always supported us, even with every crazy idea we threw at them!
Growing up, our parents made sure we knew the importance of getting an education. So, while pursuing music, we also pursued an education. Of course we thought it was because our dad didn’t believe in us and wanted us to have a backup plan… but we were wrong! Going to college was something we thought we had to do for our parents but the whole time it was something our parents were actually doing for us. We are truly so grateful. We learned that it wasn’t just the curriculum you learn inside a classroom, it was also the skillset you develop along the way, the new perspectives and insights, and getting out of your comfort zone. Our parents knew how valuable this would be for our music career.
