We were lucky to catch up with The Scenic Collective recently and have shared our conversation below.
The Scenic Collective, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
In late 2022, our guitarist and singer Don decided he wanted to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Ashley. He came to his closest friends, fellow bandmates Dylan and Christina, and asked them to help him create a song he had written for her. For months, the three of us worked hard collaborating to write, refine, record, and shoot a music video for the song. Then, in December of that year, Don gathered Ash and their closest friends together and played the music video for her. At the end of the song, he proposed to her, and she said YES! This was a huge step in Don’s life, but it also had a strong impact on all three of us. We realized that we loved collaborating together and enjoyed the process of songwriting as a group more than when we did it alone. In helping a friend, we accidentally discovered our purpose: we exist as a band to use our talents to create music for other people to enjoy and relate to. We learned over the course of the last two years that if you find something you love and that others enjoy, you will find your purpose there.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a band comprised of threw best friends from Atlanta, GA who found a love of creating music together and decided to run with it. Ever since we started in 2022, we’ve been cranking out songs and working on building a following. In May of 2024, we released four singles on all streaming platforms. Shortly thereafter, we played our first live gig in Savannah, GA, where we opened for Christian rock bands Tricord and Crimson Overtone. Since then, we’ve taken some time off from playing live shows to work on songwriting and creative production so we can share more music with the world. We are collaborating with other musicians, and producers to create a whole new sound for our listeners. It won’t be long before our debut album will be available for streaming on all listening platforms. Then, it’ll be back to playing live shows all over the metro Atlanta area.
A lot of people are very excited and proud to claim that they discovered an underground artist before they went viral on social media. We think (humbly) that we could be the next Loveless, Magnolia Park, or Honey Revenge. It won’t be long before The Scenic Collective is known across the globe.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Each of us brings a unique set of skills that allowed us to grow exponentially along our journey. For example, Dylan has several years of experience with running businesses, and therefore has been able to manage the financial side of things. This has helped us make wise financial investments that catapulted our career to where it is now. Christina is great at staying organized and was in charge of managing social marketing platforms during her college years, so she has been able to build an online following of fans through Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok. Don’s education in music production and audio engineering has given us an advantage, too. Even though we don’t have a record label, we are able to get our music out to our audiences thanks to his knowledge of the music industry. These individual skills that each person brings to the table have strongly impacted our journey. We definitely couldn’t have made it this far alone; it’s only when we combine our skills that we’re able to create at our best capacity. Our only slice of advice to others looking to improve their musical skills is this: You’re gonna have to do a lot of things you don’t wanna do in life. Pick something you do like and do that too. If you have a passion for music, then work hard at it just like it was a career. You will thank yourself later in life.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
We have so many people to thank for making this journey possible. Our family, friends, and fans have encouraged us along the way and gave us confidence to release our music. There are some people, however, that without we would have never would have started the journey to begin with. First and foremost, we wouldn’t be where we are as musicians if not for God, who gave us our talents. We have to thank our music coaches from our local church, Ryan Kiesshauer and Charity Bandy, who helped us hone our skills both as musicians and as worshippers. Our dear friends and Christina’s parents, John and Kimberly Hogg, welcomed us into their home for years, allowed us to bang on instruments for hours on end in their music studio, and fueled us with food and encouraging words to keep going on our projects. Our first gig, which launched us into performing live, was all thanks to the bands Tricord and Crimson Overtone, who discovered us on social media, felt a call to help us build our platform, and invite us to play with them. Without their guidance, encouragement, and support, we wouldn’t have been able to play that gig. Despite all the challenges performing live threw at us, in the end it all went smoothly, and that was mostly due to the support of Deric Hart, our close friend and audio engineer. He managed all the technical issues we had (and there were a lot) with a cool head and a kind heart. He supported us from behind the scenes and made that show possible for us. Lastly, we couldn’t have done any of this without the support of our dear friend and benefactor, Todd “Pops” Zill. He believed in us in ways no one else did and donated generously to our band to make expensive dreams become reality. Without him, Christina wouldn’t have a piano; Dylan wouldn’t have his guitar; and we wouldn’t have been able to make merch available to our fans. He funded our dream, and for that we cannot ever repay that kindness. We have so many people that have made our dream of being musicians a reality, and we wouldn’t be in the position we are today without them.
