We were lucky to catch up with The Sparks Sisters recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melody and Violet, we are so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how to develop empathy.? In our experience, most folks want to be empathetic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to do so. Any thoughts or advice?
Growing up, we used to perform at assisted living facilities and retirement homes. It started when we put on a Christmas concert at a facility where our grandma was staying temporarily, and from there we started performing at more places for the elderly, including a home for Alzheimer’s patients and an annual Christmas dinner event for 500 low-income seniors. Getting to see how much music touched these people was truly eye-opening. We also took the time to have conversations with whoever attended our concerts and performances, which helped us learn more about their lives and why certain songs impacted them. We learned first-hand how much music touches the soul, and even provides healing. Since then, our goal with music has often been for the purpose of encouraging or inspiring others. It’s important to know that there are real people out there with real challenges in their lives, and when they listen to our songs, we want them to have a positive impact. Going through our own difficulties has also furthered our empathy for others facing similar issues, such as when Melody (older sister of The Sparks Sisters) was hospitalized with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Although it was one of the scariest times of our lives, we learned so much through it and have a deeper understanding of what it’s like to go through a medical journey. We hope that the lyrics of our original songs, released recently in our debut album “Full Circle,” can bring hope and joy to others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are classically trained musicians who grew up performing together. We became singer-songwriters of our own unique genre when we began working with 5-time Grammy nominated producer Billy Smiley in 2021. Our career as recording artists has been the focus of the last 3 years, and we released our debut album on October 4, 2024! We are so excited to share this music with others, as we put our heart and soul into it and have many great stories to share about the process. You can find it on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) or buy the album on our website, www.TheSparksSisters.com. We are also looking forward to performing more, and are open to bookings in the Los Angeles area. Please send us any booking inquiries to [email protected]!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Our piano skills have been tremendously helpful in our music careers. We took private piano lessons starting in kindergarten and never quit. We strongly recommend music education, especially piano lessons, for all people involved in music. Secondly, our closeness as sisters has been instrumental in continuing our music duo together. Thankfully we grew up in a very loving household and we strive to put our sister relationship first over the business side of our duo. We hope to encourage other siblings to treat each other well and develop close relationships with one another. Third, our experience as entertainers has grown our love for music and performing. Because we performed so much as kids, we don’t have stage fright and love to share our music in a live setting. Getting out there and performing as much as possible is an essential way to improve your performing skills over time!
How would you describe your ideal client?
When it comes to future listeners, we hope to reach people who are looking for encouragement through music, especially young women. We also believe that our songs can inspire and entertain classical musicians who enjoy crossover genres, people who like Celtic music due to our Celtic Woman influence, and anyone who likes magical sounds combined with meaningful lyrics. As far as venues, we can see us performing our songs at theaters, women’s events, wineries, art galleries, churches, and festivals. Anyone who appreciates beautiful music would be ideal clients for us!
