We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful The Tewa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with The Tewa below.
The Tewa, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
We keep our creativity alive by having as much fun as possible. Humor is the best way to keep things lively. We joke around during band practice and we joke around during our sets live on stage.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are a 3-piece Midwest Emo band based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We make sad music for sad people. Jorge is our drummer, Joey is our Bassist, and DA is the guitarist/vocalist. Truly a trio of buffoons that love playing music for anyone that will listen. As far as upcoming news goes, We are currently working on new music and will be performing during the New Mexico State fair. (We just recently played Meow Wolf Santa Fe too which was incredible)
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
We’re all musicians with extensive experience. But just because we have been playing instruments for a long time doesn’t mean we’re masters by any means. There’s always room for improvement.
Three qualities that have helped us on our journey so far have been: Being adaptable(being open to new ideas and just going with the flow), being collaborative(letting everyone in the band contribute to our sound), and being resourceful(doing what we can with what we’ve got)
Some advice would be to just be genuine and the right people will gravitate towards you.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
It’s like the old saying goes, “Jack of all trades, Master of none.” It’s best to go all in on your strengths especially if you’re working with a team. For example, Jorge is a KILLER drummer. DA can play drums decently and get by but when we let Jorge do his thing, he absolutely shreds. When there’s someone else around you that has a skill you don’t, you have to let them shine. That’s what collaborating is all about.
