Meet The Trills

We were lucky to catch up with The Trills recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi The Trills, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

As a music group that utilizes social media, there’s nothing more gratifying than seeing a comment or receiving a message that tells us that we’ve made a difference in someone’s life. Whether it’s that our music made someone’s day, helped them through a tough time, or that our videos make people smile when they’re struggling, those small differences are what make us realize that what we do is special, and the joy we’re able to bring to our audience is real.

During the peak of COVID when we had each other as our quarantine crew, the overwhelming love from social media was a turning point for the group – as people were spending their time online consuming media and music, it was incredible to see the way viewers enjoyed our music and content – saying that it was uplifting, entertaining, and just fun to see during a time that had everyone feeling displaced. It was really at that point where we began to feel that our purpose is to spread joy through our love of music, and we’ve made it a goal to do so ever since. Our belief as a group is that the most important thing, even over delivering a perfect performance, is that at least one person goes home having felt something. Music can be healing, life-changing, and cathartic, and we truly believe that the power it holds is something we’re meant to share with the world!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

We’re a six member a cappella group from Baltimore, MD, now living in LA! We started The Trills as the Towson Trills, a college a cappella group at Towson University in Maryland. During our time at Towson, we competed in the ICCA (the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella), which is the competition shown in the Pitch Perfect movies! We made it to Finals twice, and had the honor of competing on Broadway and finding a love for performing and creating music that captivates people.

After most of us graduated in 2019, we decided we loved the group we’d created too much to end it, and branched out from the university as a professional a cappella group. Our biggest focus in our early days was creating content where we sang popular & trending songs, and we shared those to social media. Through hard work, consistency, and lots of miracles, those videos started to gain traction, and people really enjoyed our singing and our dynamic as a group. Over time, we started to see our videos go viral, and in the years since, we’ve reached almost 4 million followers across socials and have been viewed all over the world!

In the summer of 2024, we moved to LA to explore new opportunities, and started a brand new adventure together. In 2025, we’ll be creating new music, performing shows, and accomplishing new goals. We want to continue to inspire the world through the joy of music, friendship, and creativity.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Our group is made up of six talented, creative, and passionate members, and each of us has their own specialties and areas of expertise. Three of the most important areas of knowledge that have helped us reach where we are today are music, media, and business. While each of these is a large portion of what we do, the group wouldn’t function if one were missing.

Our music director, Leroy Hyson II, heads the music branch of The Trills, from creating arrangements, working as a producer & engineer for our recordings, and leading our music rehearsals. Since the group began in college, his knowledge from music theory to technical equipment has been invaluable – whether in facilitating the group arranging process or preparing arrangements of songs for the group, it’s hard to imagine how the group would function without having someone with a deep understanding of music on the team. Our media manager, Will Damanka, heads the social media & content branch of the group – and typically has a hand in anything filmed or that sees the public eye. Regarding social media posts, filming, music video production, content creation, and online interaction, being able to do those things in-house is a blessing. As we grow, we hope to have dedicated teams to assist in those areas, but the time and money we’ve been able to save has been an incredible help. Aaron Bayne works as our business manager, and has been the logistical mind behind the group since our inception. Whether receiving or submitting performance requests, business inquiries, emails and outreach, meetings, or simply working on back-end efficiency, having a strong lead who understands how to keep the business running smoothly has helped keep us where we are on the day-to-day.

Our advice to anyone looking to develop on these skills would be to be open to trial and error. Over the years, we’ve had projects succeed and others that didn’t quite reach the mark, but every experiment reaps experience. Continuation and consistency will help the process, and teach more and more each time!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

We are always looking for creators to collaborate with! While we love working with other musicians and artists, we also enjoy any chance to be creative – whether acting, writing, comedy, or more. We’re easily reached both on social media (@thetrillsmusic on Instagram, @thetrills on TikTok) or by email – [email protected].
