We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Theodore Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Theodore, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
A good friend of mine always tells me, “Life is short!” It’s a phrase you might hear a lot and not think twice about it but it always resonated with me. I want to experience so much out of life and whether we want to admit it or not, nearly everything in life involves risk. Relationships are risky because the other person can abandon or betray you. Leaving a day job to pursue your true passion is risky because you’re leaving the security and comfort of a stable income. I believe taking risks always worth it, even if that risk leads to disappointment. At least you tried and learned new things in the process.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am primarily a music composer for various media, which I do focus more on Film and Games. Overall, I really enjoy writing music. While writing music for film is full of collaboration and adding emphasis to the picture, it’s also an incredible experience for me personally. I’ve become so connected and emotionally invested in every film Ive worked on and in a strange way, it has allowed a lot of growth and healing to occur in my life. I’m not sure if it will always feel that way but for now, I’ll take it. Music creation has been such an important path for me especially since I did not grow up in a musical family. Starting on drums and growing into composing, I believe my calling is right where I’m at.
Outside of composing, I do enjoy a handful of other non music related activities that still fulfill my creative side. If it involves wine or pizza or both, I’m there!
Next up in my path is scoring a new video game coming out called Haurmon, created by the Stanke Brothers set to be released sometime in 2024. This will be much different than the short films I’ve done these last few years and I’m really excited to dive in! Keep an eye out if you’re a fan of video games. This crew is putting in so much work into this project and it’s coming out amazing so far.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Discipline. It will be difficult achieving much if you’re not disciplined. 2. Empathy and kindness not only for others but for yourself.
3. Learning to function on little sleep. Of course, this is not ideal in a long term setting but is sometimes necessary when working on projects.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Always! I’m often reaching out to film makers, directors and producers about their upcoming projects. I just love what I do and want to continue working on exciting projects with people.
