We were lucky to catch up with Theophilus Caviness recently and have shared our conversation below.
Theophilus, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I have been able to allow my creativity to flow organically. In the past I used to try to force myself to sit down and make myself “be creative.” These days, I’ve learned to take it slowly and to always be prepared. Being prepared means I always have something to jot down ideas. I typically use the voice recorder on my cellphone, or sometimes the notes app. Also, I attempt to keep a notebook on hand, because for me old fashioned paper and pencil make my ideas more tangible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I wear many hats in my professional life, with experience spanning multiple creative and technical disciplines. My work includes Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Voice Acting, Writing, Videography, Video and Audio Editing, and Consulting. I am also an Author, using storytelling as another way to bring ideas to life.
At the core of everything I do is my passion for helping others. I often describe myself as a “bridge”—someone who listens to people’s needs and connects them with the solutions, skills, and resources that bring their vision into reality. Over the years, I’ve witnessed ideas succeed and others fall short, and I’ve taken those lessons to refine my own craft while guiding others in theirs.
What drives me most is the fulfillment of seeing people succeed. Helping others transform their ideas into something tangible and impactful is not just my profession—it’s my purpose.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the three qualities that have had the greatest impact on my journey are Adaptability, Creativity, and Communication.
Adaptability has allowed me to navigate setbacks and unexpected challenges with resilience. Life and work don’t always follow a straight line, and being willing to pivot often opened doors I didn’t expect. Some of the detours that felt frustrating in the moment ended up being the very experiences that shaped my growth the most.
Creativity has been equally important. Seeing things differently can sometimes feel isolating—especially when others don’t immediately share your vision. But creativity is what allows you to bring something new into the world. Staying true to that perspective, even when it feels uncomfortable, can be the key to breakthroughs.
Finally, Communication has been at the center of everything I do. Whether it’s sharing ideas, collaborating with others, or simply listening, the ability to connect with people and exchange meaning has been invaluable in moving projects—and relationships—forward.
For those just starting their journey, my advice is to enjoy the process. Don’t rush past the small wins or take the challenges for granted. Both have lessons to teach you if you’re open to them. When you face criticism, don’t dismiss it outright, but also don’t let it break your spirit. Instead, treat it as raw material—something you can examine, take what’s useful from, and use to grow stronger.
Every step, whether smooth or difficult, has value. If you embrace that mindset, you’ll not only grow in your craft, but you’ll also grow as a person.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I don’t want to sound boastful, but I would say my first book, There Is A Dinosaur In My Basement, has been the most impactful milestone in my journey into the literary world. That project became so much more than just writing a story—it was an education in itself. I learned how to structure a book from start to finish: everything from layout design, margins, gutters, and bleed, to the psychology of the page turn and how it shapes a reader’s experience. I discovered the importance of a strong cover, the value of creating book trailers, and most importantly, what it means to see a project through to completion.
That book taught me that creating something isn’t just about the end product—it’s about the process, the lessons, and the growth that come with it. It showed me that every detail matters and that perseverance turns ideas into realities. For me, it was proof that with commitment and curiosity, you can step into an entirely new world and make your mark.
