Meet Theresa Kim

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Theresa Kim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Theresa, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

I think as an actor self-care is really important. It was really easy for me to get depressed or anxious over small things. For me journaling has become really therapeutic. Whenever I feel depressed, lost, or anxious I take out my journal and just write anything and everything that comes to mind. I found that journaling not only helps me clear my mind, but it also helps me reflect on who I am as a person and how I’m doing. I also like to go on a social media/media detox. I think social media has its benefits, but it can be overwhelming for me sometimes and it really helps to just log out and focus on the now. So, I frequently turn my phone off and just focus on myself and my dogs.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a second-generation Korean-American actor, but I also dabble in other jobs in the film industry too. I think what excites me the most being an actor is the chance to tell various people’s stories. The most challenging and most fulfilling film I recently did was Home, that’s now in the festival run. I think while working on it I not only got a chance to meet and work with insanely talented people, but also got a chance to really challenge myself as an actor. It definitely was one of the hardest roles I had to play, but it taught me a lot about myself as an actor and what I needed to do to take care of myself physically and mentally.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think for me the most important qualities and skills that were instilled in me is learning to be flexible, to keep an open mind, and being able to see a situation from another person’s point of view. I think the best advice that I was given when I was starting out was to keep an open mind. You never know when any of the things you obesrve can help you and be beneficial to you and your craft.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m always looking to collaborate with other actors, directors, producers, filmmakers, etc. I love being on a set and feel energized by the environment. I love a challenge and am willing to take on any role that I’m given. If anyone ever wants to collaborate they can find me on Instagram @iambome.
