We recently connected with Theresa Morris and have shared our conversation below.
Theresa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I believe I developed my resilience growing up in my family system. I am the middle child, only redhead and have 2 brothers, one older, one younger. My father was extremely strict and expected a lot out of me. My Mother was passive, and I felt as if I was on my own to survive. I started working early to earn money, bought my own car, and made my dresses for prom and graduation, because I couldn’t afford store bought formal dresses. I started my full-time career straight from high school and attended the community college at night to obtain an associate’s degree. I worked in the engineering field for over 30 years. The last 4 years I worked 2 jobs, as I obtained my real estate license, and then my Broker’s license. I LOVE assisting and serving others in the community.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always had an interest in architecture, the building process, and DIY. After 30 years in the engineering field, I obtain my real estate license, and then my Brokers license. I love helping people discover their options in finding a new home and started investing in fixer uppers myself. As I entered my 60’s I appreciated being a senior myself and started specializing in assisting Seniors. Whether they were “right-sizing” into a new home, preparing for independent living, or aging in place. I try to assist as if they were a family member. I developed Workshops titled “60’s is the new 40’s” and provided them to the community for free. Our next workshop will be introducing AI and to the community and how it can empower your life in everyday ways.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe the three most important qualities that have served me well are:
1. Confidence, whether I was or not. I would research and believe I could do almost anything given the opportunity.
2. Perseverance. I have often used the phrase – I get knocked down, but I get up again.
3. Leadership. I am not easily intimidated by others, and not afraid to lead a team or project.
My advice to others starting out or changing careers: Diligently work on the above skills and as they say, fake it until you make it. Jump in and tackle challenges. You learn by misstates, so don’t be afraid to makes some early on.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The challenge in front of me at this time is that my husband has retired, and I am not ready to. Until I am, I visit him in Florida, while I reside in Virginia. I will continue working remotely from wherever I am at any given time.
