We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Thom Van Den Ende. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Thom below.
Thom, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from a deep-rooted belief that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth. I naturally tend to focus on the positive aspects of any situation, even when faced with difficulties. Whether in my personal or professional life, I approach problems with a solution-oriented mindset. Rather than dwelling on setbacks, I channel my high energy levels and positive outlook to find creative ways to overcome obstacles. This proactive approach allows me to stay motivated, and I believe it’s a key factor in my ability to navigate challenges with confidence.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Born and raised in the Netherlands, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the beauty and art of flowers. A few years ago, I made the leap to move to the United States and bring a piece of my heritage with me by launching Dutch Flower House. We specialize in carefully curated dried flower concepts, all made from 100% sustainable Dutch flowers. Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and I take great pride in offering products that not only brighten spaces but also respect the environment.
The last few years have been nothing short of a rollercoaster – but it’s the kind of ride that fills me with energy and excitement. From navigating the U.S. market to building a passionate team, every day presents a new challenge and opportunity to create something beautiful. Together, we work hard toward one simple goal: making people happy with our dried flowers. There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing our creations bring joy to others, and that drives me forward.
What excites me the most is the creative freedom I have in this business. I love letting my imagination run wild, experimenting with new designs, and achieving our goals as a team. It’s that shared sense of accomplishment and the endless possibilities for growth that keep me energized and inspired.
In addition to running Dutch Flower House, I have a deep love for music. DJing has become my personal escape – a way to unwind and connect with others through sound. Whether in business or behind the decks, entertaining people is something I’m truly passionate about, and it’s all about creating memorable experiences.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I believe three key qualities have been the most impactful: resilience, creativity, and adaptability.
First, resilience has been essential. Building a business, especially in a new country, comes with its fair share of challenges and setbacks. There have been moments when things didn’t go as planned, but resilience helped me push through and keep moving forward. For anyone just starting their journey, I recommend cultivating a mindset that embraces failure as part of the process. The ability to bounce back from setbacks and view them as learning experiences is critical to long-term success.
Second, creativity has been at the heart of my business. From designing our dried flower concepts to finding unique ways to connect with customers, thinking outside the box has been invaluable. Creativity isn’t just for artists; it’s a tool for problem-solving and innovation in any industry. My advice to those starting out is to give yourself the freedom to experiment. Don’t be afraid to take risks or follow unconventional ideas, as they often lead to the most exciting results.
Finally, adaptability has been crucial in navigating the unpredictable nature of entrepreneurship. Moving to a new market like the U.S. came with a steep learning curve, but staying flexible and open to change helped me adjust quickly. For those early in their journey, I encourage developing a willingness to evolve. The business landscape is constantly shifting, and those who can adapt to new circumstances will find themselves better positioned for success.
My biggest piece of advice is to be patient with your progress. Focus on building your resilience, nurturing your creativity, and staying adaptable to whatever comes your way. These qualities will serve you well throughout your journey.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I would love to collaborate with artists who share a passion for creativity and sustainability. I’ve always been inspired by the idea of combining art with our dried flowers to create unique, living pieces that blend natural beauty with artistic expression. Whether it’s working with visual artists, sculptors, or even designers, I believe there’s immense potential in exploring new ways to showcase dried flowers as part of larger, creative installations or home decor pieces.
This kind of collaboration would not only elevate our products but also bring a fresh perspective to both the art and floral worlds. I’m excited about the possibility of merging these two passions and seeing how far we can push the boundaries of creativity together!
