We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Thomas Angeletti a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Thomas , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
There are no such thing as “haters”. These are simply people who haven’t found their own purpose, and see in you what they want for themsevles. This disdain drives a deep wedge inside them, and causes them to do/say things a normally happy/fullfilled person wouldnt do. The only reason that these people are “haters” are beacuse you give them your energy/time in the first place, Take that energy from them, and give it to people/projects/etc that make you happy.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Filmmaker living in Columbus, Ohio. I make films, but i also do some event videography here and there. I also love to do photography when inspiration strikes. Currently, Im most excited about our new film Friends Forever, which will be streaming late Januaray 2024 on several Platforms.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For a technical skill. learn lighting. Expensive cameras and lensea are cool, but getting at good at lighting will make your work better than anything else. From a personal Standpoint, Persistence is key. Keep grinding and stop at nothing until you get anything and everything you want. If you have a down day, get some rest and get back at it tomorrow. Buisness wise, Never take or do a creative job that doesnt speak to your soul. Doing things for money or popularity mean nothing if you have to sacrifice what you love and yourself.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Currently, and with most filmmakers or creatives, we are facing distribution challenges for our films. Its something that happens to everyone, but we’re currently working hard to find what works best for us. If I were to name another challenge that we all face, its funding. Funding films is paramount to making them in the first place, so we are working on becoming better at this as well.
