We were lucky to catch up with Thomas Coselli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Thomas, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
I have come to realize over the years that burnout is both cyclical and inevitable. Once I understood that the next challenge became how to prepare for it so I could lengthen the time between burnouts, lessen their affects, and overcome them quickly. Burnout affects us all differently and the cycle is also unique to you and your profession so the remedy for it will also be different person to person. I do however believe there are some universal things that everyone should do to stay ready for it. Here are the top 3 things that have helped me.
1. Stay active, get sleep and eat healthy: Burnout starts in the brain and there is no quicker way to crash out of a productive season of life than to neglect your body and mind. Staying active releases endorphins that will strengthen your positive mindset and prevent/postpone burnout.
2. Be innovative: Repetition is a root cause of burnout. Again it all starts with your mind and if you are innovating and being creative within your field of expertise then your mind has no time to get stuck in a rut. It is so important to explore new things, educate yourself beyond your comfort zone, and test new ideas. Experiment with your schedule, marketing, sales pitch, or the way you communicate with clients. One subtle change could help your business enormously.
3. Educate yourself: Sometimes burnout comes as a result of simply not understanding the situation and the frustration and stress that comes with it. Never be the smartest person in the room. Always have someone you can go to who will listen to your new ideas or answer your questions so they don’t build up to a breaking point. You should always be expanding your knowledge of your profession. Dig into the origins of your field so you understand it from the top down. Your goal should be to become as well rounded as possible while maintaining your status as an expert in your niche.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My focus professionally is firmly in real estate. I am blessed to lead an amazing team of realtors at COMPASS, the #1 real estate company in the nation. Our team is the Urban Properties Group and we were just ranked the #8 team in Houston and inside the top 35 teams in the state of Texas! We are a true full service team and help buyers, sellers and renters across the greater Houston area and even beyond. The real estate market has gone through some truly unprecedented movement over the last few years which means that the right plan for an individual is often a moving target and highly personalized. What is special about our team is that no matter what move makes sense for you we have agents who are experts in that area of the business. You can find us on Instagram @UrbanPropertiesHTX or call 832-929-8932
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that have been very impactful in my career are patience, consistency and integrity. Every time I hear this question I cannot think of three more important qualities to have in your professional life. Patience will give you an automatic competitive advantage. It is something nobody wants to copy these days more than ever. Most people think patience is waiting to do something but often than not its doing something and then waiting. So take that job, buy that house, seize that opportunity! Consistency is right there along with patience in that nobody wants to copy it. Ironically that is the difference between good and great. Integrity is what will set you apart from the competition more than anything. Your reputation is all you have in this business so guard it like your life depends on it.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for good people to collaborate with. Most of the time these individuals are in the fields of photography/videography, marketing, local businesses, builders/developers etc. I am also always interested in meeting realtors looking to join a new team. I feel that what we are able to offer is very hard to find and that our agents would agree. If you fit into any of the above categories and are interested in learning more about what we have going on at Urban Properties Group shoot me a text/call at 832-929-8932 and lets talk!
