Meet Thomas Halle

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Thomas Halle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Thomas with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
The movie industry is tough. You can wake up one day and feel like you’re unstoppable. Then, the next morning, you feel like a fraud and an imposter. It’s easy to give up. But for me, there is no alternative. There is no PLAN B. I want to make movies, and I refuse to sit still and do nothing.

I got tired of waiting for opportunities to prove myself, and decided to make them happen myself; I made my own thing. I took the risk.

I think my work ethic comes from that… My past self would be proud of where I am today, so I don’t want to let him down. I do this for me. That’s why I cannot allow myself to fail or give up. This is my dream, and no one is going to accomplish it for me. Dreams are worth fighting for.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hi, my name is Thomas Halle and I am an independant filmmaker based in Montreal, Canada! From directing, to writing and producing… Basically; I make movies for a living!

I think what’s most exciting about my line of work is the creative aspect and freedom. Picturing something in your head and bringing it to life on the big screen just never gets old. I am releasing my Feature Film Debut as a director and writer this year with a project called RED BOX.

I also produce a lot of scripted audio series. What’s so fun about these is that you have no limitations. There are no visuals, so you can create any type of world you want! It’s all about delivering the atmosphere right, and pushing the voice actors to their limit to make it all sound organic, real and cinematic.
My first one is called CABIN TALES. It was a very ambitious project that took many months to make. It is now an ongoing series loved by many and I’m grateful everyday for the community we’ve built around it.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First, I think my work ethic and devotion to my craft is what helped me get to where I am today. I remember a friend telling me something that stuck with me ever since.

He said; “You need to ask yourself two questions. First one; what is your dream? Second one; what did you do today to make that dream a reality? And if your answer to the second question is ‘nothing’, then go back to the first one.”

It’s not a race, it’s a marathon. Not everyone gets an overnight success story. Little steps everyday. Which brings me to the second quality that was impactful for me; PATIENCE.
Patience is key. It doesn’t matter if your friend is climbing the ladder faster than you. It doesn’t matter if your idol had already made it at your age. Everyone has their own journey. If you put in the work, your time will come.

Third one would be to stop worrying about things you can’t control.
You’re an actor and you’ve sent in an audition. SEND AND FORGET.
You’re a writer and you just pitched a show? WHAT’S DONE IS DONE. MOVE ON.
The less you worry, the quieter your life gets.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I stopped comparing myself to others. Comparison is very difficult to fight because of how toxic it is.

I had to remind myself that I’m not racing anyone; it’s all in my head.
Social media is filled with success stories without anyone talking about their failures and hardships. To compare yourself to this is unvalid and not a real reflection of your hard work.

Live your own journey. Be happy for others. Chase your dream and focus on yourself. Do it for you.
