We recently connected with Tia P. and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tia, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
Communication is everything. Not only were my parents musicians, but my mom – like her mom- was a school teacher. Language, as a whole, was big in my family because it was equally stressed as a creative tool and a life tool. Songwriting, rapping, and singing, are all forms of communication, and you have to know your audience in order to be effective. I’ve always been around a diverse group of people from age, to socioeconomic status, to religion, to race. As such, the way I communicate and engage with each of them is different – genuine, but different. I inherited my love for words from my dad, and I just find it fascinating how many words and ways we have to communicate situations and emotions that are most universal to us all. It’s just knowing people. You can say the right thing with the wrong tone and it fall on deaf ears – musically or in life in general. Sometimes you can have the right tone and totally have the wrong words! I’m blessed to have had an educational foundation and a creative curiosity for words that allows me to meet people where they are in order for communication to be understood, not just heard. If I don’t feel what I’m saying, why should you?
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I do a lot lol. I’m a rapper, singer/songwriter/ drummer and actress from Inglewood, Cali baby! Hip hop to funk, pop to rnb, to rock. I’ve got all your writing needs covered. I’ve accepted the moniker “The Placement Queen” do to my continuous placements on major television and streaming shows, movie trailers, commercials, and animated Barbie films on Netflix. I love what I do. Sync is a world where so many creatives can eat, but few know how to get in or that it even exists. Yes, when you’re in it like I am, it can be time consuming – but the money is GOOD. I do a lot more studio work doing requests for several sync houses I work with. The constant work keeps me on my A game in all aspects from writing to my vocal performance on tracks that range from Anthemic hip hop, to 90’s rnb, to and animated kids songs. Recently I’ve been performing a lot more, and it feels good to be back on stage. No check can replace that feeling. However, I’m also in a position to take time for my own music again, unrestricted by the demands of the sync world. Be on the lookout for new music by the end of the year!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
A) As much as I love music, I stay just as knowledgeable about the business side as well. Music is a business at the end of the day. I asked questions, and I had people around me that were more knowledgeable than I was, but didn’t take advantage. They passed their knowledge and I learn things on my own as well. The internet is a great tool.
B) I’m not someone people don’t like to be around. My pastor said this a long time ago: “Don’t let your talent take you where your character can’t keep you”. You have to work at both. There are plenty of talented people who don’t get the calls I get or never get the gigs they are clearly qualified for because the people in charge simply don’t want to deal with them. I never want to be in that caliber of people. Treat everyone kindly and with respect, from the engineer to the producer, to the janitor. Having a good time is infectious and usually that’s what people remember.
C) Get/ keep a solid team around you. By solid I mean, people who really care about building you and your brand the same way your do, not those who leech off your success for their benefit. My team isn’t afraid to disagree with me, give tough love, protect, promote, or get involved, and I trust them to do that. They allow me to be occupied with being an artist in a world where many independent artists are a team of 1. It can be a process, but once you have a good team, it gives you a lil breathing room.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m a creative! Of course I’m looking to collab! When I say collab, of course I mean as a rap or singing feature, but also as a co-writer or producer as well. I’m sought after to work with many up and coming artists of all genres helping to discover or expand their lyrical voice. This applies to established artists and producers I’ve had the pleasure of working with as well. I’m looking for people who want to tell stories through their music. Also, I still do session work as a drummer. Most people assume I’m too busy to ask if I still make myself available for drum gigs. Drumming is my first love. I’m always going to make time for it when I can, so just ask! Lol. Latin, to jazz, pop to rnb, to funk – I gotcha for a session.
