We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tia Penny a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tia, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
One of the most important part of maintaining a career in music is self care. I have always valued maintaining good grades, a good social life, and breaks in general. However, I always find myself reaching for my notebook late at night to write some poetry or towards my guitar to turn it into music. The truth is, music is the output for me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Tia Penny, and I am a 16 year old singer songwriter. The most exciting part of this part of my life it is the way music brings people together! Ive always had an attraction towards music, writing my first lyrics at age 6. I currently have 2 songs out on all streaming platforms with plans to launch my third release, Mirror Room very soon! This third song is the pillar of my EP. It describes the feeling of transparency through the idea of being trapped in a room full of mirrors. My EP will release with 3 more songs shortly afterwards together so the full six song EP will be available.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills that were most impactful to my journey were to respect my work/life balance, to keep up my professional technique, and honor my passion. For those who are early in their journey of music, the biggest piece of advice I could give is to keep going! There is no limit of knowledge or creativity with music, so keep learning!
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the last 12 months, I have seen a lot of growth in my writing. I have been focusing on letting their songs reach their full potential of complexity and tapping into deeper emotions with my writing.
