Meet Tianyi Liu

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tianyi Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Tianyi, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Keeping my creativity alive is a constant journey, one that I’ve learned to nurture both inside and outside the realms of cinematography. For me, creativity thrives when exposed to varied experiences and influences.

Firstly, I constantly immerse myself in the ever-evolving world of technology. By experimenting with tools like the Unreal Engine, I challenge myself to visualize stories in new dimensions, pushing my boundaries as a cinematographer. These technological advancements serve as a canvas where I can paint with a broader palette, allowing me to reimagine the art of storytelling.

I also draw inspiration from the world around me. Whether it’s nature, architecture, or the subtle interplay of light and shadow in everyday scenes, I try to observe the world through a cinematic lens. This practice keeps my perspective fresh and often seeds ideas for future projects.

Attending film festivals and watching diverse cinema from around the globe is another avenue through which I fuel my creativity. Understanding different narratives, cultures, and visual styles keeps me connected to the global language of cinema and helps me approach my work with a renewed sense of wonder.

Mentorship, both giving and receiving, plays a crucial role as well. Engaging with emerging talent through platforms like the ASC Vision Mentorship Program, I’m constantly exposed to fresh perspectives. These interactions not only keep me grounded but also introduce me to innovative ideas and techniques that the newer generation is experimenting with.

Lastly, taking breaks and giving myself the space to reflect and rejuvenate is essential. Whether it’s reading, traveling, or simply indulging in hobbies outside of filmmaking, these moments of pause often lead to unexpected bursts of creativity.

In essence, keeping my creativity alive is a delicate balance of seeking inspiration, embracing innovation, and allowing myself the room to breathe and grow.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Tianyi Liu, a cinematographer and colorist trained at the American Film Institute. My work has found a home at over 50 international film festivals, including prestigious events like LA Shorts, NYAFF, and the Taipei International Film Festival. At the core of what I do lies the art of visual storytelling—capturing emotions, crafting narratives, and painting stories with light and shadow.

What I find truly exhilarating about my work is the blend of artistry and technology. As a cinematographer, I have the privilege to transport audiences to different worlds, times, and emotions—all through the lens of a camera. This journey becomes even more fascinating as I integrate cutting-edge technology, like the Unreal Engine, into my toolkit. It allows me to push the boundaries of conventional storytelling and introduce viewers to experiences they’ve never seen before.

Beyond the visual elements, I’m immensely proud to be part of the ASC Vision Mentorship Program. It’s an initiative that embodies the spirit of passing down knowledge, nurturing emerging talent, and ensuring that the world of cinema remains vibrant and innovative for generations to come.

As for the future, I’m excited to announce that I’m collaborating on several projects that will soon grace both national and international screens. While I can’t reveal too much at the moment, I promise they’re going to be visual feasts that will further bridge the gap between traditional filmmaking and modern technological marvels.

In essence, my brand is all about evolution, innovation, and heartfelt storytelling. Whether you’re a film enthusiast, a budding cinematographer, or someone who simply appreciates the magic of cinema, I invite you to join me on this exhilarating journey.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting upon my journey, three distinct qualities come to mind that played a pivotal role in shaping my trajectory in the world of cinema:

Technical Proficiency: In the ever-evolving world of cinematography, staying updated with the latest technological advancements is crucial. My ability to utilize tools like the Unreal Engine set me apart and enabled me to bring fresh perspectives to traditional storytelling.

Advice: For those early in their journey, I’d recommend a continuous investment in learning. Attend workshops, online courses, or even informal group sessions to ensure you’re abreast of the latest in camera tech, lighting techniques, and post-production tools.

Artistic Vision: While technology offers tools, it’s your artistic vision that breathes life into a project. My time at the American Film Institute honed my ability to see the world through a unique lens and interpret stories in ways that resonate deeply with audiences.

Advice: Watch a wide variety of cinema, both contemporary and classic, from different cultures. Analyze scenes, understand shot compositions, and try to decode the emotional language of films. Also, don’t hesitate to seek feedback. It offers fresh perspectives and helps refine your artistic voice.

Networking and Mentorship: Being a part of platforms like the ASC Vision Mentorship Program not only provided me with invaluable insights from industry leaders but also expanded my network. Building relationships within the industry can open doors to opportunities you never knew existed.

Advice: Attend film festivals, industry seminars, and workshops. Engage in conversations, seek mentors, and be open to collaboration. Remember, cinema is a collective art form; the relationships you build early on can lead to rewarding partnerships in the future.

In essence, the world of cinematography is vast, dynamic, and rewarding. It’s a blend of art and technology, emotion and craft. For those embarking on this journey, stay curious, remain passionate, and never stop learning.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being in the world of cinema, the pressure to consistently create and innovate can indeed be overwhelming at times. Over the years, I’ve developed a few strategies to navigate these challenging moments:

Step Back and Disconnect: Often, when I feel overwhelmed, I realize it’s my body and mind signaling the need for a break. Taking a step back, even for a short while, can provide a fresh perspective. I might go for a walk, meditate, or simply indulge in a hobby unrelated to filmmaking. This detachment allows me to return to my work with renewed energy and clarity.

Organize and Prioritize: Being overwhelmed sometimes stems from having too many tasks at hand or juggling multiple projects. I combat this by maintaining a detailed planner. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps and setting clear priorities helps in streamlining my efforts and reducing the feeling of being swamped.

Seek Feedback and Collaborate: Filmmaking is a collective art form. When I’m stuck or feel the weight of a project, I turn to my network. Discussing ideas, seeking feedback, or even just venting to a trusted colleague can provide invaluable insights and solutions.

Revisit Past Work: Whenever I doubt myself or feel overwhelmed by the expectations, I revisit some of my past projects that have been recognized at festivals or by peers. It serves as a reminder of my capabilities and the milestones I’ve achieved in my journey.

Stay Physically Active: Physical activity is a great stress buster. Whether it’s a session at the gym, a jog, or even some yoga stretches in my living space, keeping my body active helps in alleviating feelings of overwhelm. It not only rejuvenates the body but also clears the mind.

For those navigating the pressures of a creative industry, it’s crucial to remember that feeling overwhelmed is natural and common. It’s not a reflection of your capabilities but rather an indication of your passion and investment in your work. Listen to your instincts, take breaks when needed, and always remember why you embarked on this journey in the first place. Your passion and commitment will guide you through the toughest of times.
