We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany Hemingway a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I might be chronically optimistic. You could possibly theorize that I am simply living up to my name. My name is Tiffany Joy Hemingway. My growing up years were tough; but mama taught us how to live in joy no matter the circumstance. No costume for school? No problem, let’s make one. We are out of the normal ingredients? Well, there’s a substitute for those.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My personal styling journey is aspirational. I’m at the beginning, won’t you join me? My take on style is unique in its DNA. To me, style has always been more than fabric and accessories. My roots began with me experimenting on all of my friends, anyone who would let me, to style their outfits and bring out their smile. If they were happy, then I was satisfied; bigger bonus if they couldn’t stop checking themselves out in the mirror. I was hooked!
I love discovering the shine within clients that has been buried under anxiety, disappointments, and insecurity. The list of encapsulated layers that could possibly hinder someone’s glow are sadly endless.
When I would hear someone say “I don’t like this or that about my body” I was so excited to show them how incredible they were and about all of their many style options within their comfort zone. I love these connections! I might describe myself as a type of liaison, guiding clients into a world they have always known but couldn’t articulate. My goal is to grow the houseofhemingway brand in a way that nourishes my family and blesses the community. My love for fashion is simply the surface layer of my love for building others up and speaking life into those around me. These next few years I want to get established locally and the next ten years I would like to take this internationally.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Growing up, I had a lot of freedom. That freedom allowed me to make messes so many times that mistakes no longer carry a sting. Now I am capable of hearing “no” and facing disappointment in a way that is only a bridge to a different destination.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Wow, I think I probably feel overwhelmed every single day! I crawled out of severe depression and anxiety, which I have now learned tools to stay ahead of. Sometimes the depression goes away, and sometimes you just get stronger. Surprisingly, this has so much commonality with personal styling. Your body/environment is your template, or as Jordan Peterson states “make your bed”. If unfamiliar with Peterson’s popular quote, he illustrates that step one to grasping a goal is changing your environment, changing something within reach. I use and apply that concept within personal styling. I think that I saw how unbelievably helpful it was in every season of life to have a rot wardrobe, postpartum wardrobe, active wardrobe, and a leveled-up wardrobe that I was convinced others could enjoy it in a similar way. I learned that the best way to get out of feeling stuck was to complete the tiniest task you possibly can until you can add a little more and little more. Everytime I pulled myself out of anxiety and depression, it had some effect on what I was wearing. When I would change my environment, the inside chaos had a little more room to relax as well. I hope to share my love of fashion with others for years to come! Working within community to grow and create is my happy place. But enough about me, what were you born to do? Let’s find out together.
