Meet Tiffany McFarlane

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany McFarlane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tiffany, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?

Developing empathy has been a profound journey for me. Having personally navigated through challenging experiences and understanding the importance of walking in someone else’s shoes, I’ve embraced my life’s purpose. This year, my family faced the adversity of homelessness due to a flood that disrupted our lives. However, with the unwavering support of our community and a determined spirit, we persevered and secured a new home for our family.
This experience heightened my commitment to empathy. It reinforced the significance of extending kindness, as we truly never know the battles others are fighting. As a testament to this commitment, our nonprofit now focuses on donating gently used business clothing for women, recognizing the transformative power of support during difficult times. When I express understanding, it’s not just words; it’s an earnest effort to share the same kindness that sustained us during our challenging period.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I help support and encourage the community by hosting events! I love the process and execution of the events. I don’t look at it solely from the business side, but as an attendee too. I want it to be a well-rounded pleasant experience for everyone. I’ve hosted fashion shows to birthday parties and currently host networking events and community markets around Tampa Bay. Our organization started last year this week, November 21, 2022 with myself and 3 other mamas with their children. Now, we serve and support over 1,500 local mompreneurs, their children, and their businesses through the events we host.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Social Media! I’ve spent the past decade working in social media marketing and while I don’t provide those services, I do utilize a lot of what I’ve done with past clients with my business. If you aren’t well versed in social media marketing, connect with others that are. Don’t be afraid to barter services if you need to, but also take time to learn the basics of social media marketing (and marketing in general).

2. Be patient! NOTHING happens overnight. People assume that because we have a blossoming audience that it’s always been that way. No. I’ve had meetings where it’s only been a few of us and then I’ve had a whole room full of people. It varies, but you have to be patient while remaining consistent.

3. Willingness to learn and grow! You can’t grow if you’re not willing to learn, receive constructive feedback, and apply the work needed to grow. As I said, nothing happens overnight. With a plant, in order for it to blossom, you may have to go through trial and error phases where it may discourage you that the plant isn’t growing. But when you take your time to not only nourish, but have patience and you’re willing to learn what you’re working on, eventually it’ll grow. Don’t give up on your business because you’re in the developing stage. Learn and grow.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely! I love collaborating and partnering with people because it’s a win win in many cases. I always say that you have to be discerning because not every opportunity is an opportunity – FOR YOU, but that’s okay. I love collaborating with small businesses from influencer marketing to hosting events at local establishments, I am all about helping support one another and growing together.
