Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tiffany, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience stems from my faith and the values instilled in me by my small-town upbringing. The path I’m on now wasn’t one I was “supposed” to take—there was no example for me to follow, and no one believed it was possible, not even my parents. My mom encouraged me to pursue a corporate job, prioritizing safety and stability. But I had to try. Deep down, I knew I had the work ethic to succeed.
Moving to LA on my own was terrifying, but my upbringing taught me that I couldn’t be outworked. Every time I faced setbacks, I made it a point to rise again. And with each time I got back up, I started to believe more and more that what seemed impossible could become my reality.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have the privilege of writing for television and producing, and I find writing for animation to be especially meaningful. It’s a unique opportunity to help shape the perspectives of young audiences. The stories we create have the potential to resonate for years, which is truly inspiring.
Producing live-action projects gives me the chance to tell unique stories while collaborating with diverse and talented crews. Regardless of the medium, I’m constantly learning and growing, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important skill you can develop in any field is the ability to build and maintain relationships. For Black professionals in particular, cultivating strong professional connections is often essential for advancement. While the idea of meritocracy is frequently promoted, the reality is that success isn’t always based solely on hard work or talent.
Equally important is staying open to learning and growth. I don’t claim to know it all, and with every opportunity, I strive to gain new insights and skills.
Finally, be authentically you. Take the time to discover who you are—what you like, what you want, and what makes you unique. These personal qualities are what will truly draw people to you.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Even as I’m developing my own projects, I’m actively seeking my next writers’ room opportunity and pitching my shows. I don’t see these as challenges but as part of the journey of being a writer. I’m excited to see what’s next on the horizon!
