We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Til Doomsday Aiyana Rose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Til Doomsday, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
When I started to find success in my community locally, there would be times where people would tell me that they were watching my growth. Before that it never occurred to me that they would pay attention to the small wins, or at all honestly. Then it became people telling me I inspired them to start sharing their ideas. At that point I let go of a lot of the business aspect of things, and thought about how I could inspire people through creativity. The idea of having a purpose is still blurry to me, I don’t know that I am meant to do one thing. More so my purpose is to be the most passionate and unafraid version of myself I can be, so that others might do that for themselves. A lot of my art is appreciation for other talents, it is so cool to me to be a fan of something that has motivated someone or everyone to become more comfortable being themselves. If I can be someone like that to anybody, it’s a dream.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At the moment Im most known for my paintings, and live painting demos. Participating in a lot of art battles, and demos for people to see, its all subjective so might as well have fun. Painting to me is the most colorful part of my brain, hopefully it shows in my work. Something that might differentiate me from other artists is that I don’t know what I am doing fundamentally, I did not go to art school or even regular high school. Im also the first person to live paint onstage at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, thanks to Mike G. Every time I make a painting or decision creatively I’m shooting into the sky to see what I might hit. Chasing a career in art to me wasn’t something I took for a real thing till 2022, my first art walk. As far as new ideas go, I am starting a streetwear line inspired by my brand. Right now today I wear my mock ups, getting some made for my friends. It is expected to launch in May 2025. This is something I’ve thought to create since the age of 14 so, pretty fulfilling personally.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the three most important things I have learned would probably be when I first met designer Mitch Modes, I came at him really excited but scared in my own endeavors. He told me that my Instagram was my resume for people to see. Learning that as an artist social media was a tool to get me in front of those who need to see me, and to come correct about myself and my art was game changing advice. Prior to this social media was for my friends & family. Second, is that nothing is free but you shouldn’t be paying too much for exposure. If somebody truly wants you to be apart of their event, they will work with you. Creative relationships, mutual respect and building with other people is very important, in that way money talks. Unless we have a creative exchange I pay all my friends for their work because they deserve it. Lastly, in real life there is delayed gratification. My career has had so many high notes, and some where id work real hard for nothing to happen- at least nothing I could visibly see yet. No matter what you do know that your work, as long as you don’t stop, will take you somewhere.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They pulled me out of regular public school haha. I love them both. No but really I wonder who I would be if I had a regular experience. Maybe I’d care way more about what others think, or maybe I would have known to be an artist sooner. My parents both taught me different things. My moms super tough- super cool roquera, chola lady. She has given me a voice, and she always is the first to tell me she’s proud. My dads a really loving man, thanks to him our family is huge. He has always treated me like an adult too, They have allowed me to be myself as much as they could.
