Meet Tim Nyberg

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tim Nyberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tim, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Honestly, my confidence has been built through a long road of trial and error. I’ve taken on a lot of challenges over the years—some successful, many not—but each one has been a chance to learn something new. Every failure has added to a growing pool of experience, and that experience becomes the foundation I lean on when facing new obstacles.

In the world of tech and business, especially running The MacGuys+, nothing stays the same for long. So I’ve learned to treat each new challenge as an opportunity rather than a threat. That mindset shift—paired with the willingness to try new things, screw up, and keep going—is what’s built both my confidence and self-esteem. You don’t become confident by avoiding failure; you earn it by getting back up, adjusting, and moving forward.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’ve always believed that confidence is earned through experience—especially the kind you gain by facing tough challenges head-on. That mindset has shaped my journey and the way I’ve built The MacGuys+. Since 1999, we’ve gone from solving everyday tech issues to offering high-level consulting that blends business strategy with deep technical expertise.

What makes The MacGuys+ different is that I understand both sides of the equation. I speak “tech,” but I also speak “business.” That means I can help my clients not just fix things, but actually align their technology with their long-term goals. Whether it’s supporting remote teams, improving cybersecurity, rolling out automation, or helping teams get more from their Apple ecosystem—we make tech work for the business, not the other way around.

Lately, a big focus has been helping clients tackle compliance challenges—whether that’s PCI requirements, cyber insurance documentation, industry regulations, or overall risk management. We all know how it goes: year-end rolls around and suddenly there’s a pile of checkboxes that need to be marked off—MFA enforcement, backups, encryption, endpoint protection, policies—just to keep coverage or stay compliant. Most businesses feel overwhelmed and uncertain if they’re doing it right. That’s where I come in.

I help them build proactive, repeatable systems to stay ahead of those requirements—not just to pass an audit, but to actually improve security, reduce risk, and sleep better at night. That’s a great example of what I love doing: merging the business side of the house with the tech side to deliver real, strategic value.

At the end of the day, I want business owners to feel calm, confident, and in control of their technology. I’m focused on bringing enterprise-level thinking to small and mid-sized businesses, helping them grow with tech that supports—not slows—them. That’s what The MacGuys+ is all about.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One of the most important skills that’s shaped my journey—especially in the tech and consulting world—is simply being able to talk with people. I’ve never met someone I couldn’t have a conversation with, and I genuinely enjoy hearing people’s stories and understanding what makes them tick. That ability to relate to others, ask questions, and communicate clearly has been a huge asset in working with clients, especially when translating complex technical issues into real-world solutions they actually care about.

The second quality I’d call out is curiosity. I’ve always had a strong pull toward exploring new things—tools, ideas, industries. I’m the kind of person who just jumps in and starts figuring it out. That curiosity drives my learning and keeps me ahead of the curve, especially in a field that’s constantly changing.

The third one is willingness to try, fail, and try again. So much of what I do today—whether it’s business strategy, MDM deployment, compliance, or remote support—was built by diving into something I didn’t fully understand at the time and figuring it out through doing. I didn’t wait for perfect knowledge. I just got started. And every failure or misstep became another layer of experience that now helps me guide others.

For anyone early in their journey, my advice is:

Talk to people. Not just customers—everyone. Get comfortable learning what makes people tick.

Stay curious. Don’t be afraid to explore things outside your comfort zone.

Start before you’re ready. The best learning happens by doing.

The more you try, the more you grow—and over time, you build the confidence, knowledge, and intuition that others come to rely on. That’s the real path forward.
