We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Timothia Reid. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Timothia below.
Timothia, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
That’s a work in progress! I didn’t use to be as confident as I am now. I am working on practicing self-love daily because I have learned that I am a priority. I am so used to putting everyone else’s needs before mine. I am learning that my feelings and my needs matter. I strive to be better every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
First and foremost, I am an educator at heart. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but my passion for education, especially literacy, is what keeps me rooted in this field. I feel like teaching is a very important job if not THE most important job in the world. Teachers create every other profession out there. Everyone has to have a teacher to instruct them on how to do their job.
There is a phrase that says, “Reading is fundamental.” I believe this to be very true. If you are unable to read, you lose access to almost everything in the world. Well, that has kind of changed in today’s world because we have so much new technology, but it is still a very important life skill. Not only that, reading allows us to escape into worlds that we could not have even imagined. You can learn so much from the comfort of your own home, in your own bed, if you want. I strive to share my love and passion for reading with everyone, especially kids. One of my mottos is, “There is a book out there for everyone!” I wholeheartedly believe there is a book for everyone to enjoy. They just need the opportunity to find it!
I am also bilingual in English and Spanish. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. I am also very passionate about helping our ELL (English Language Learners) students and parents in the district. I am currently working on getting my second master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Grand Canyon University. My hope is to someday become an ESL teacher.
When I am not working as an educator, I switch to production and content-creating mode. I currently produce a show for my good friend, Luberta Lytle, which is titled “Living Life with LuLu”. This show airs on Tuesdays at 7 pm through the OCP Network app or online on their website. The show is featured on the AOT TV channel. I have been taping and editing her show since August, and I love all the new technology features and platforms I am learning throughout this process. On top of that, I also dabble in content creation on social media.
Lastly, I have been a co-author in two books: “The Loss of a Child” and “The Power of … What is Love??”. Both of these books are by Mikkita Moore and can be found on Amazon. This year, I am currently working on publishing my own book.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities in my journey were perseverance, trust, and self-awareness. Perseverance because I don’t give up easily. Trust because of my trust and faith in God. I am self-aware because I know what my talents are and am working on improving them daily.
I advise anyone with dreams they are holding back on never to give up. If you don’t take that first step, how will you know what you can become? The world needs your talent!
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My number one challenges/obstacles are myself and fear. I am the only one who has been holding myself back due to fear. I’m not sure if I’m scared of failing or just of the unknown. I overcome them by simply taking steps forward and doing things scared. I’m using that same fear to drive my dreams and future goals. I cannot continue to hold myself back.
