We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Titus Walker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Titus below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Titus with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Titus Walker CEO of UEL -My mom. She was a single mom of 5 kids and she was unexpectedly on her own when my father was put into prison for something he didn’t do. She worked 3-4 jobs while putting herself through college getting her real estate license and teaching us what she could in the meantime. One thing that really stuck is if you are going to do something put 100% into it and finish. That was a lesson that both taught me to not start something I wasn’t willing to finish and gave me the work ethic to finish what I started. Without that example I would not know what it looks like to truly commit to something or someone.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are creating the UFC of video games. Creating a community of gamers that love gaming and competition. Then setting up the match so it determines the best well rounded gamers and giving $100,000 to the winners! We are currently on our 8th season and we are really beginning to gain a lot of traction and now are one of the largest esports leagues in the world. We believe gaming teaches different life skills and each genre is unique be it fighting, shooting, sports, racing, or strategy games. We are currently working on a TV series as well as getting ready for our world championship, we call it the Endgame that will take place at the Devos theatre in Michigan.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My journey was most impacted by my ability to communicate, my drive to learn and study an industry, and my belief in myself and my skills. In order to make it through the hard stuff your dream has to be so big that you don’t see the small stuff that doesn’t go your way. Keeping sight of the vision is so extremely important. You should really take the time to understand what you are interested in being involved in. This way when you are approached and people question your dream you understand the question. It isn’t about knowing everything blind spots will happen. But with the proper research and understanding you will at least understand what they are asking so that you can go figure out the answer if you don’t already have it. Expect resistance and understand it will only sharpen you.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mom did so many impactful things. But one thing that my dad did that I don’t know if he even meant to do. The day he left and was facing and almost 20 year sentence I was about 7-8 years old. He gave me a big hug looked at me in my eyes and said. You are the man of the house now. To be honest I really had no idea what that meant. I started searching out what a man of the house was. I asked lots of questions. I would look for other men that might show me the way. I made decisions thinking they were the “man of the house” decisions. Those words pushed me to think. Think about my impact on others. Made we want to stand up to bullies. Made me want to be a good example. And it made me work extremely hard to be what he believed me to be in that moment. I never got the chance to ask him why he put that type of pressure on me and I feel I may have held that against him for a long time. But I do know the pressure made me a real “man of the house” and I am so extremely grateful for it now.
