We were lucky to catch up with Titus Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Titus, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
The best way to do this is to use them. Every no has a slight sharpening effect especially when there is reasoning behind the no. When I first began I presented in front of friends and family what I was setting out to accomplish. They ALL said it wouldn’t work. Something they said along with that is it is impossible to follow it will confuse anyone. This served as vital information. I used that to go to the drawing board with my wife and have her help me formalize the details. We put down what the league is today that night creating the format and the wheel from using the nay-sayers information to our benefit. At the end of the day a no means its time to grow and do your job a bit better next time. Everyone said no until a few said yes. Those few grew into a lot, and a lot grew into an army. Business is like building a religion. Making people into believers isn’t something that is given it is earned and if you don’t believe you have to earn it you are in the wrong business.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started in gaming at age 4 when my dad got a sega and taught me Mortal Kombat. It was the first time I remember really wanting to be good at something. I would play with him as much as possible and practice with my siblings. Growing up I got into real estate development and sales. Creating communities as small as 10 homes and as large as 2000 homes I learned over my tenure of almost a decade what creates a successful community. This is something that I took with me to esports. When I got involved I realized that the current business model across all games left a lot of room for innovation. This began my journey in creating the next worldwide sport. Now with over 100k gamers and 600 pros we are one of the largest leagues on the planet. Currently we are working on a tv series, and our 8th season championship is June 8th at the prestigious DeVos theater in Grand Rapids.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Self Awareness – Understanding what you are good at as well as what you are not. To develop this begin searching out people smarter then you and ask them to tell you about yourself. If you don’t have this already then it will be hard to grow without outside help.
Research – Spend time looking at the industry from all angles
Tenacity – Make the goal so big that you cant see the small stuff let alone make it a big enough deal to stop you
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Passing off tasks. Most stuff I feel I need to do myself to get the results I want. I have learned the results can be much better then what I want when I trust others enough to present other geniuses with the vision and let them run with it.
