Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to TK Lawyer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
TK, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I believe if you are going to write, write what you love. I love angels and I have always had an interest in paranormal themed subjects so pairing the two together just made sense, to me.
I write in the unique genre, of angel paranormal romance yet my books are steamy which makes them vastly different from YA and, somehow, controversial. Not a lot of authors take on this “sub-genre” and, actually, I am pretty proud of writing in a “different,” distinctive category of paranormal romance. However, I haven’t always been applauded for my efforts, ending in reviews condemning me for writing fictional angels that have nothing to do with the bible. Well…I always have felt that books are subjective, and, sometimes, they are not meant for everyone, and I try (though it doesn’t always work) to not take harsh, critical, negative opinions to heart but I do a learn a lesson from them, each time.
One time I was attacked as soon as I got into the room. It was my first and only local writer’s critique group with a large Florida association. At the time my book, The Way Back to Heaven, was just a lovely concept in my brain and as I proudly read part of the first chapter of Josiah’s book, a lady with red glasses on one side of the large rectangular table, I sat at, condemned me for writing about angels that had sex. I remember persisting through the meeting under her judgment, though I am not sure why I stayed around after her harsh criticism and when I went home, I cried my eyes out. But-I did not let her stop me. Instead, I wrote her in a book and made her the gum-popping cashier that looks over the counter at Nightfall.
I know that what I write is unique (but actually not all that unique if you look at some of the angel paranormal romance books that are in local stores). I love what I write, I am not going to stop writing and I write with a sense of realism that makes my books a bit different from other angel paranormal romances.
Because I admire and respect angels so much, every angel paranormal romance I write is filled with love and I try to honor each character in my story with a unique perspective, different barriers and challenges and, of course, an HEA.
I have always thought people should do what they do regardless of the critic’s opinions and regardless of how people may get in your face and challenge you or even challenge your spirituality. Actually, if they challenge you, I say that you are on the right track. Keep going!
What I write has nothing to do with my spirituality but everything to do with my imagination and creativity. I march to my own tune, and I always will. As long as I am right with what I write, then all is good. There will always be a reader out there to enjoy my books and that is what keeps me going.
The smiles, the joy and wonderment on the faces of my readers. The lovely words they spew at me when they finally meet me. Their warm hugs and their appreciation. That is who I write for and that is who keeps me motivated and doing what I do. My fans have to be open minded (just like me) to read my books and I absolutely adore every one of them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Well hello there! My pen name is TK Lawyer, and I am an International Bestselling and award-winning author who writes steamy-scorching hot paranormal and contemporary romance. My alpha males dominate the stories with their fiery, feisty mates. Some are fated mates, others are slow burn, but all are fun adventures with a lot of spice, in between, to keep you turning pages.
I am an avid coffee enthusiast who lives in the Central Florida area with my hubby and adorable, lovable American Foxhound, Molly, who runs the house and has stolen our hearts.
I love getting creative with my characters and adding unique, interesting situations in my stories that others have not even thought of. I put my characters into these situations, sometimes, and see how they react and handle the dilemma I have given them. It is quite fun and it’s great entertainment for my readers, too. I also love to throw in some comedy and comical moments like dancing archangels that sing on a stage or an angel that ends up at a Passion party to protect his fated mate when she is, instead, inebriated and didn’t realize she had called him.
I have persisted with my writing through many adversities including my own father not supporting my passion. I have always felt you need to do what you love. Life is too short.
My current WIP is another angel paranormal romance. Her Fallen Angel will be the third book in the Wingtopia Club series. Declan is the doorman to Wingtopia, the night club for Archangels and higher. I am having fun writing his story and adding in little extra adventures, as he woos his fated mate, Velvet.
I have launched a new blog/website that readers can check out and follow me on. You can also purchase signed paperbacks and merchandise from my site. https://coffeecatbooks.com
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think being able to tell a story is number one. This encompasses a lot of skills but the baseline is having a plot, characters and some type of barrier. Once you have these all lined up, you can expand on the story from there. I would advise keeping a notebook, or something of this sort, by your side for those moments that an idea pops up. If you are a pantser like me, and not a plotter, you will want this for those inspirational ideas you do not want to forget.
I think having a basic knowledge about the subject you are writing about helps with your story realism and storyline. If I am writing about a new shape shifter, I will try to look up the animal the human shifts into and match those realistic behaviors so that the shape shifter mimics facts. Regarding angels, I have a basic knowledge of them and how they act, behave, and think and I use this in my books. When I was writing Archangel Michael’s book, Escapade, I did some research to make sure I added certain facts about him and how he is portrayed.
Thirdly, learn, learn, learn. Remember, trial and error happen and it’s okay. Sometimes, you will have disappointments but those lead to knowledge and you will know not to go back that way, again. You will have good editors and bad ones, good publishers and bad ones, good experiences with authors and maybe not so good ones. Take those positive moments and positive camaraderie’s and strengthen them for you may be able to help another author along the way who is struggling in an area you just mastered.
Developing your skills and knowledge comes with time and yes, believe it. They say this all the time and it is true. Your writing gets better with every book. You won’t notice it, at first, but if you go back and read your first books again, it’s okay to cringe. That was you back then. Don’t let that stop you. Keep going. You can do this!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My dad, who did not support my writing endeavors and told me I would not make any money doing this, was actually the one who introduced me to my love of books.
Every year when the Scholastic book fair came to my school, he encouraged me to buy as many books as I wanted. Money was not a factor when it came to books and he wanted me to get all the books I wanted to read. I am so grateful for his encouragement and support which introduced me to a new, unseen world only available through reading.
My mom also loved books and we would spend hours reading books while seated near each other. Her support of my reading only added to what my father had already instilled in me.
