We were lucky to catch up with Todd Ezzi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Todd, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic was not always as strong as it is now. As a young man, I watched my parents work countless hours every week, only to turn around and give time back to their kids and community, always without complaint. As I entered my teens, I attended Little Rock Catholic High School, which has always been known to push students out of their comfort zone. At CHS, I was surrounded by other students, teachers, and coaches that all shared a strong work ethic, which in turn became ingrained in myself. Last, I found success in college baseball as a product of my work ethic, which just served to strengthen it even more. At the end of the day, my work ethic is a product of being surrounded by people who have been unwilling to accept failure and do whatever it takes to succeed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always been an avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast. After graduating college, I decided to follow in the footsteps of my father and become a coach. At the age of 32, I was named Head Basketball Coach at a school in the largest classification of Arkansas sports. When I was 38, I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming an inventor, while also keeping my job teaching and coaching. After 2 years of research and development, I applied for my first patents and opened my own business, Rixey Outdoors. After 4 years in business, we have become a recognized name in the outdoor market and continue to thrive.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Perseverance- There were hundreds of times in the last 6 years that things seemed to hard and life seemed to busy to continue. My perseverance allowed me to continue, despite the fact that it would have been so much easier to quit.
Work Ethic- My work ethic has allowed me to continue to drive my business forward, despite the long hours and tedious work.
From building products to learning how to run a business, it has taken a tremendous amount of work to figure it out. Being able to continue to work hard through it all has allowed my business to thrive.
Creativity- My creativity has enabled me to design new products, get patents, and market my company in a successful way. The ability to think outside the box has been invaluable.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge I have right now is increasing production and continuing to bring new products to the table while running my business. The time it takes to manage our advertisement and social media outlets, produce and ship products, and run the financial side of the company can be overwhelming at times. Pair that with trying to invent and source new products and it can seem impossible. I try to aproach every day and every task with enthusiasm and energy and trust that if I outwork everyone else out there, I will be successful.
