We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Todd Kent a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Todd, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
I live a demanding life and to keep up I’ve had to develop some good habits. In the evening before I go to bed is when my next day starts, I set the intention for the morning including what time I’m going to wake up and what’s on the docket for the morning. The second thing I do every morning is start my “daily log”, take a scoop of AG1 and sit for a 20 minute gratitude meditation. I also have a home gym that I utilize regularly, everything from weight training, to zone 2 & 5 training and even an infrared sauna. Staying focused on my physical and mental health keeps me sharp, there’s no way I could keep up with my life without these practices.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the CEO at Boochcraft. In 2016, we launched the first hard kombucha brand in CA and the second in the US. We’re excited to work directly with farmers to make a beverage so fresh you can taste the difference. Four times a year, we launch a new Liquid Art Lab flavor. This year’s theme is retro sodas and we kicked off with a classic, Cherry Limeade. The reception was so positive we decided to keep it year round. Keep an eye out for Blueberry Gingerale in stores now.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost, naivety. If I had known the amount of effort that it would take to build this brand from scratch I might have second thought it. Nah…
Second, tenacity. I think people romanticize the idea of starting their own business. Piece of advice, if you’re not willing to sleep on the floor of your business because you’re there so late and have to be back so early that it doesn’t make sense to drive home, then don’t do it. That’s the level of commitment that it takes to be successful.
Lastly, and I’m still developing this muscle, the ability to celebrate the wins. It’s so easy to move on to the next challenge without celebrating the accomplishment. Stop, take a moment to acknowledge the win. It’s important.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
There are so many, I have to list two.
Good to Great by Jim Collins
Level 5 leaders look in the mirror when things go wrong and out the window when they go right. You have the get the right people on the bus before you can decide where to take the bus. To know what to focus on you have to answer three questions “what are we passionate about?” + “what can we be the best in the world at?” + “what drives our economic engine? profit / what denominator”
Atomic Habits by James Clear
