We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tom Botchii a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I think that if you can get lost in what you do, the idea of “work” goes away. So in my opinion, the key to having a great work ethic is truly being in love with your career.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My biggest focus right now is rediscovering my love for filmmaking. I’ve been spending a lot of time rewatching the action films I grew up with… stuff like Rapid Fire and The Crow. And then I’ll check out something newer that I love like Ong Bak or The Chaser. And I’ll sort of let the two marinate and analyze why something worked for me when I was growing up, versus why something that I watch now works… then with all that in my mind, I’ll go about creating something. That way, I’m in this neverending swirl of things I love. So the idea of self-doubt, or writer’s block, never really gets a chance to seep through because I’m too busy in the rediscovery process.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, the most important quality is to maybe stop thinking so much… like if you’re someone who is reading this right now, I have an idea for you – STOP.
Now go do the thing that’s on your mind.
Other than that, take breaks. Let your brain open up, go jump in the shower, work out, and take yourself to dinner. I promise you that idea you have in your head that you’re stuck on, the solution will come to you during one of your breaks.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
This probably sounds insane, but I always suggest giving the book ALIVE a read. It’s one of the most harrowing stories of survival in human history and after you get through it, you won’t complain about whatever’s bugging you.
