Meet Tom Taylor

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tom Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Tom, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My purpose, 100%, comes from the Lord. My purpose for being is to serve Him, worship Him, to know Him, and to make Him known. I’ve been extremely blessed to be able to do this via music, which He gifted me with. Music has been my most impactful way of sharing my faith, as well as help encourage others. My songs have always been very personal, raw, and honest, which many can relate to.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Thank you for reading my story! I’m a Christian singer-songwriter and independent recording artist based in Seattle, Washington. I’ve been releasing music for quite some time (my first album was released in 2008), and I’m looking forward to more upcoming collaborations and releases. Most of my music is Christian and Worship, but I also have a love for writing mainstream ballads, and even released an award-winning compilation album featuring ballads I’ve written throughout the years, titled “Love Songs: Chapter One” in 2022.

My next release is a country song I co-wrote with my friends Hannah McDonald and Chelsea Erica Smith down in Nashville, called “Unsure of Me.” It features a Johnny Cash-influenced rhythm, similar to my latest single, “Hard to Be in Love.” This single will be included as part of my next album, “Unrelenting Love”: another album of ballads, but rather than being a collection, it will include a dozen or more love songs I’ve written (or co-written) over the last couple or more years. A couple of these tracks (“For A Lifetime” and the aforementioned “Hard to Be in Love,”) have already seen the light of day as single releases, and are available on all streaming platforms. I know this will be one of my all-time favorite projects, and I can’t wait to complete and release it! If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

In my genre of Christian music, biblical knowledge is important. Life experiences, especially with personal lyrics like mine, also play a role.

Of course, in the field of music and songwriting, learning and practicing your instrument, and honing your skills writing solo and with others, are all impactful.

The business side of things, like booking and promoting, are also incredibly important.

My advice for aspiring artists and musicians would be to practice and write on a regular basis. Explore writing and collaborating with others. Co-writing has been a great way of connecting with other artists, and the friendships I’ve gained are priceless. Songwriter retreats and conferences are also a great way to gain songwriting experience, as well as knowledge on the business side of things.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Number one: my dad leading me to Jesus. I learned a lot from him during the 18 years I had with him, but I’m most thankful for him leading me in the most important decision of my life: to accept Jesus as my savior when I was 9.

Next would be my parents support when it came to music. My mom’s brother was a touring musician, so I believe this made her supportive when it came to music, besides being a music lover. My dad played guitar and introduced my older brother and I to the instrument. The rest is history! Great music was always playing in our home growing up.
