We were lucky to catch up with Tomeka Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tomeka, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my personal experiences of overcoming adversity, including my struggles with physical flaws, bullying, short-lived relationships, and traumatic events in my childhood. Serving in the Air Force for 23 years and sometimes being the only woman, or black woman, or black officer in a room has truly humbled me. I am the first and the only generation in my family who have served in the United States Air Force as a Commissioned Officer. My journey of self-discovery, self-love, and the support from my family and mentors have played a significant role in strengthening my resilience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a transformational life coach dedicated to empowering women to elevate their mindset, exude confidence, and embrace self-love to live the abundant life they desire and deserve. My work is rooted in helping women discover their true identity, overcome past traumas, and step into their full potential. The most exciting part of my role as a life coach is witnessing the transformation in my clients as they break free from limiting beliefs and embrace their true selves. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see women gain confidence, achieve their goals, and live authentically.
In addition to life coaching, I am a proud owner of a t-shirt brand that promotes positive affirmations and messages of empowerment. Our t-shirts are designed to inspire and uplift, serving as daily reminders of self-worth and inner strength.
I love seeing women wear our designs and feel a sense of pride and confidence in themselves.
As a travel specialist, I curate personalized travel experiences that allow groups of women to explore new destinations, cultures, and adventures. Traveling has always been a passion of mine, and I believe it can be a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation. Helping others create unforgettable travel memories is something I find incredibly rewarding.
I’m also an author, sharing my journey and insights through my writing. My book delves into my personal experiences and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Writing has been a therapeutic outlet for me and a way to connect with others who may be going through similar struggles. My first self help guide is Riding the Waves to Self Confidence.
Currently, I’m excited to announce the launch of my new group coaching program called “WHO AM I.” This program is designed to help women delve deep into discovering their true identity and purpose. Through guided exercises, discussions, and support, participants will learn to strip away societal labels and embrace their authentic selves.
All of my ventures are centered around the word “flawless,” but not in the way society typically defines it. To me, being flawless is about embracing self-love, resilience, and confidence. It’s about celebrating our unique journey, overcoming challenges, and standing tall in your truth.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful for me were resilience, self-awareness, and continuous learning. These qualities have shaped who I am today and guiding my path toward helping other women.
1. Resilience:
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward despite challenges. I think of a rubber band when I think of the word resilence. My resilience was forged through personal adversities, such as dealing with physical flaws, bullying, and traumatic events in my childhood. To develop resilience, it’s essential to cultivate a positive mindset and focus on end results rather than problems. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learn to see failures as stepping stones to success. Building a strong support system of friends, family, or mentors can also provide the encouragement needed to stay resilient.
2. Self-Awareness:
Self-awareness involves understanding your strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and values. It was through self-reflection and healing from past traumas that I began to discover my true identity. To develop self-awareness, spend time reflecting on your experiences and emotions. Journaling can be a helpful tool for this. Seek feedback from trusted individuals and be open to learning more about yourself. Practicing mindfulness and meditation can also enhance self-awareness by helping you stay present and aware of your thoughts and feelings.
3. Continuous Learning:
Embracing a mindset of continuous learning has been vital in my personal and professional growth. Whether through seminars, reading, or attending workshops, I have always sought to expand my knowledge and skills. For those early in their journey, I recommend committing to lifelong learning. Identify areas where you want to grow and seek out resources to help you. Stay curious and open-minded, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Learning from others, including mentors and peers, can provide valuable insights and accelerate your development.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
Embrace Challenges- Understand that challenges are a natural part of growth. Embrace them with a positive attitude and view them as opportunities to build resilience.
Practice Self-Reflection- Regularly take time to reflect on your experiences, emotions, and actions. This will help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and guide your personal growth.
Invest in Learning: Continuously seek knowledge and skills that align with your goals. This could be through reading, taking courses, attending workshops, or learning from others.
Remember, the journey of self-discovery and growth is ongoing. Stay patient with yourself, and celebrate the progress you make along the way. Each step forward brings you closer to the abundant life you desire and deserve.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Yes, public speaking has always been a significant challenge for me. Despite the confidence and resilience I’ve developed in many areas of my life, the fear of speaking in front of an audience remains daunting. This fear is something I continue to work on and strive to overcome.
