We were lucky to catch up with Tommi Jo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tommi, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
In reflecting on how I found my purpose, it’s clear that my journey has been shaped by both trial and error and a deep connection to my passions. Growing up, music was always my primary pursuit. However, after graduating, I faced burnout and explored various interests, including reading, working with animals, and nurturing my faith in Jesus. These experiences, although seemingly divergent, provided valuable insights into who I am.
The pivotal moment came after my dad passed away. Writing became a way to process my grief, and through that, I rediscovered a love for music that transcended self-comparison. Instead of viewing my creativity as a competition, I began to embrace it as a means of expression that integrates everything I hold dear. My writing now draws from the fiction and fantasy novels I love, allowing me to craft stories that resonate with my experiences.
During my “music office hours,” I find joy in the company of my pets—Stitch, Rey, Flynn, Elsa, Minnie, Darling, and Merlin—who remind me of the simple pleasures in life. My faith also plays a crucial role, serving as a foundation that informs my creative process and interactions.
Ultimately, my purpose is a tapestry woven from all the aspects of my life. While I once felt out of place as a homebody in a culture that values socializing, I’ve come to understand that my desire to share stories through music and connect deeply with others is a meaningful expression of who I am. Embracing my individuality has allowed me to cultivate a fulfilling path, grounded in love and authenticity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Tommi Jo and I am an Americana singer and songwriter out of East Texas. I’m passionate about storytelling, particularly at the intersection of fantasy and reality. My art reflects a love for weaving tales that resonate with both the whimsical and the relatable. I believe that every story has the power to connect us, and I strive to create music that invites listeners into a world where imagination meets everyday life.
I’m thrilled to share that my next big project is my debut album, Fairytales! This album is a unique collection that reimagines beloved stories from childhood, infused with an Americana twist. Each track will explore familiar themes while introducing fresh perspectives, making it both nostalgic and new.
Scheduled for release in spring 2025, Fairytales represents a culmination of my experiences and passions. I can’t wait for listeners to experience these reinterpreted tales through my music. Stay tuned for updates as I embark on this exciting journey!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, three key qualities and skills stand out as particularly impactful:
1. Persistence in Writing: No matter how challenging it gets, keep writing, even through the inevitable writer’s block. This practice not only helps you hone your craft but also allows you to push through creative barriers. My advice is to set aside dedicated time for writing, free from distractions, and to embrace the process, even when it feels difficult.
2. Resilience in the Face of Rejection: Taking rejection personally can be disheartening, but it’s crucial to view each closed door as an opportunity to move on to the next. Remember, if it’s meant for you, it will work out in time. My advice is to cultivate a mindset of resilience; keep pursuing your goals and stay open to new possibilities.
3. Avoiding Comparison: In the music industry, comparison can quickly stifle your creativity and motivation. Instead, focus on appreciating what others bring to the table. Learn from them, but don’t measure your worth against their achievements. My advice is to celebrate your unique voice and remember that everyone’s journey is different.
For those early in their journey, developing these qualities will be essential. Embrace persistence, cultivate resilience, and foster a mindset of appreciation rather than comparison. Your unique story and talents are what will ultimately resonate with others.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
A book that has significantly impacted my development is Songwriting Without Boundaries by Pat Pattison. This resource breaks down the art of songwriting in an accessible way and offers numerous creative prompts that have been invaluable in honing my skills.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from this book is the power of engaging all five senses in my writing. Often, we focus on what we see or hear, but by incorporating taste, touch, and smell, we can create a richer, more immersive experience for the listener. This approach allows for deeper connections and makes the music more relatable and evocative.
Whenever I find myself at a loss for inspiration, I turn to this book for random topics to explore. The prompts not only spark creativity but also push me to think outside the box, helping me grow as a songwriter. If you’re looking to enhance your writing, I highly recommend diving into this resource!
