We were lucky to catch up with Tommi Rose recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tommi , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Theres a really cool thing someone once told me which was the more you do outside of your art the more you have to bring to your art. So my creativity comes from life itself. So often i find myself in situations that I think it would be a shame to not be documented in some way. Whether it’s an act of kindness, or a heart break, or something so ridiculously funny that I don’t want to forget it. The notes app in my phone is filled with hilarious things my family and friends have said over the years. My voice memos in my phone are full of my deepest and darkest thoughts put to music. I take pictures everywhere i go because I love the idea of preserving a moment forever. It’s almost hard for me to imagine NOT being inspired by life itself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I started my creative journey in Musical theater when I was 3. When I was 5 I talked my way into a musical production that I wasn’t old enough to be in and that energy has carried out throughout my career. I’ve always been the person that takes no as a challenge and I feel like my life has been a long string of changing peoples minds. After musical theater I got into film and TV immediately fell in love and I now have a long list of credits you can find on my IMDB. Music has also been there throughout my entire life starting when I was very young and my Dad would play guitar and I would write songs about monsters and ponies. My songs grew up with me and now I use music to deal with intense emotions and turn them into something that other people can relate too. I have several original songs out on Spotify and other music platfoms. My writing has carried on into scripts as I’m now writing, producing and directing my own projects.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. resilience 2. passion
3. curiosity
Patience is key for people early in their journey. When you have such a full mind and a full heart of passion and ideas it’s challenging when you feel as though you don’t have an outlet yet. Theres always a way to create even if it seems amateur to you, you don’t have to be perfect at everything on the first or even second or third try. Having patience with yourself is crucial .
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I’ve gotten better at taking control of my own life and career instead of waiting around for someone else to offer to me. I’m getting braver and trying new things that i thought I wasn’t experienced enough to venture into
